Critics' opinion about Wildwood animation

Rotten Tomatoes: 19 reviews - 100% score

Metacritic: 11 reviews - 85 out of 100 points

100/100 – Screen Rant | Reviewer: Liz Declan

From start to finish, Wildwood is a truly mesmerizing story that benefits from stunning stop-motion animation, rich, multi-layered characters that eschew common stereotypes, and a fantasy narrative. The story feels familiar in its details and mechanisms, but in important ways, it is unique and unpredictable.

100/100 – The Hollywood Reporter | Critic: Frank Shek

Wildwood animation is the most ambitious project of Laika studio to date and it can be considered the masterpiece of this company.

100/100 – The Telegraph | Critic: Robbie Colin

Wildwood is a modern fairy tale, stunningly beautiful and captivating, reminiscent of the land of Narnia. Each and every frame of it is made with elegance and artistry and watching it took my breath away. I'm not sure I've ever seen a stop-motion film so detailed and magnificent; I don't even know if I will have such an experience again in the future.

94/100 – TheWrap | Critic: William Bibiani

Travis Knight's film is amazing to watch even without knowing how it was made. But if you know the process of its production, even if you are only slightly familiar with the process, you will be faced with one of the most amazing animated films ever made.

90/100 – Collider | Critic: Aidan Kelly

Leica Studios has made many eye-catching films in its nearly two decades of existence, but Wildwood Animation surpasses all of them, featuring some of the most breathtaking cinematic sequences of the year.

90/100 – Next Best Picture Critic: Matt Naglia

Wildwood animation combines storytelling and artistic skill in a special way and reminds us why we go to the cinema; Not just to have fun, but to distance ourselves from reality and communicate with others and the world around us. This film is the best animation of the year and the shining gem of Laika Studio's impressive and growing legacy.

90/100 – Variety Critic: Guy Lodge

Wildwood animation is a remarkable success both in terms of artistic and technical achievements and as an entertaining work for different generations of audiences.

80/100 – IGN | Critic: Tom Jorgensen

Wildwood animation is a fantasy, exciting and impressive epic whose hand-made and frame-by-frame animation doubles its value and charm; However, slips in the narration of the story sometimes prevent the film from shining completely.

80/100 – Screen Daily | Reviewer: Wendy Ide

If the story of the film lacks in terms of novelty and originality, its performance more than compensates for these weaknesses. The film's stunning stop-motion animation pushes new boundaries in scale, detail and ambition. You have never seen anything like this before.

67/100 – IndieWire | Critic: David Ehrlich

The considerable time and attention spent on the animation of Wildwood does not prevent it from being the least magical film of the Laika studio to date. However, its weaknesses help reinforce the story's message about the persistence of magic, even as magic itself resists its permanence.

60/100 – The Guardian | Critic: Peter Bradshaw

The film's stop-motion animation style, like Coraline's animation, has a tangible, solid and pleasant clarity. In my opinion, this method leads to the creation of more natural characters and a more physical presence; Features that are a welcome change compared to the pervasive digital look of Pixar's works.
