Mosquito-borne diseases kill more than 700,000 people a year, making the mosquito the deadliest animal in the world. Protective measures usually involve synthetic chemicals like permethrin and deet or natural repellants of varying degrees of effectiveness, but clothing brand Royal Robbins is looking at another way: fabric. Its Salathé Sun Hoodie is made with a proprietary tight-knit ripstop fabric that the company says is nearly 92 percent effective against mosquito bites in lab and field tests and won't fade over time, while being lightweight and breathable. As an added bonus, the fabric also offers UPF40+ sun protection.
