Friday evening update: Street Fighter is currently below expectations with a $30M opening after a $12.5M Friday (including previews) at 3,575 theaters including previews. Hopefully Saturday can keep it up with family traffic. Mind you, the only MLB playoff game this weekend is between Tampa Bay and the Cleveland Cavaliers, so don't expect a slowdown at the box office.
It's interesting to note that the opening here alone was close to what the 1994 Capcom game finished at $33.4 million (not adjusted for inflation). The picture, starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, opened to $6.8 million through Universal.
Legendary's first title under its new deal with Paramount attracted a huge social media following over the weekend with 920.6 million from TikTok, YouTube, Instagram, Facebook and X. This is larger than other video game movies, Legendary's Minecraft Movie (772.4M), Mortal Kombat 2 (452.5M by 452.6M). This is all according to RelishMix. One of the big early September efforts for Street Fighter was the playable novel "The Street Fighter Combo Trailer" launched on YouTube Playables, which placed the film in a virtual gaming cabinet and used game-style mechanics. Street Fighter currently has an audience rating of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, not far from the 86% of the R-rated Mortal Kombat 2, but based on a similar martial arts video game born in the Gen X era.
A24's You Can See Everything, with an RT audience rating of 99% and an expected opening of around $12M after a $5.3M Friday (including previews) in 885 theaters, will dethrone Melania, whose $7.1M debut was named the best opening for a documentary in a decade. The data we have shows that You Can See Everything is the second-best opening for a documentary in the past 17 years (not including concert footage), behind 2004's Fahrenheit 9/11 ($23.9 million) and ahead of Disney's 2012's Chimp at $10.6 million. Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the trippy non-fiction film follows Theranos architect Elizabeth Holmes and her partner Billy Evans as the former approaches a stint in federal prison.
Universal Blumhouse Atomic Monster's Other Mommy opens in 3,370 theaters with $2.4M second Friday and $7.4M second weekend in third place, -73%, for $43.9M total. This drop is to be expected after last weekend's D+ CinemaScore.
Watch 20th Century Studios' Whalefall Beach with a $2.6M Friday (including previews) and a $6-7M opening, well below the $11M tracking it had seen. Many enjoy watching Austin Abrams get devoured by Zack Kerger-style zombies. No one wants to see him go through the Pinocchio experience of being eaten by a whale. Audience score on RT is 82%.
Focus Features' Sense & Sensibility sees $3 million Friday and $6 million 3-day at 2,545 sites. That's just $600,000 less than the $6.6 million that Focus Conclave opened to, but that figure was less.theaters, which is 1,753. No points for RT audience yet. The previous Ang Lee-directed 1995 take on the Jane Austen classic had a platform release that day, but cruised its way to a $43.4 million domestic finale.
Post-Exclusive Update: Paramount/Legendary/Capcom's Street Fighter was exactly what we saw last night, $4M in previews, while A24's maddened Elizabeth Holmes doc You Can See Everything posted $1.75M, but with stellar outings (eg, 910% positive rating recommended).
20th Century Studios' Whalefall was $900,000 in Thursday's run, while Focus Features' revival of Sense & Sensibility was $1.15 million in all previews (not just last night).
You can see everything 50-50 men and women as Gen-Z'ers turned out in a big way last night in Los Angeles and New York with 75% under 35. Letterboxd now holds a 4.7 and is among the top 50 movies of all time.
Shot in California for a net $60 million, Whalefall follows Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) as he dives off the Central Coast in search of his father's (Josh Brolin) remains after he dies and is swallowed by a giant sperm whale. With only one hour of oxygen trapped inside his stomach, Jay realizes that his father's hard-earned lessons may be the key to his escape.
The thriller has been booked across 3065 cinemas including 500 premium format screens and 250 D-Box/Motion screens. Last night's previews are a far cry from last fall's $2 million haul for Heart of the Beast , which opened to $20 million (this one starring Brad Pitt, of course).
The Los Angeles Dodgers are not going to the World Series this year as the Milwaukee Brewers eliminated them from the National League Championship Series last night. Tampa Bay and Cleveland are still in the ALCS with games tonight and Saturday. Translation: This year's World Series will have no impact on the box office capitals of New York and Los Angeles.
1.) Other Mommy (Uni) 3,365 theaters, $36.5 million wk/week 1
2.) Verity (AMZ) 3,572 theaters, $17.5M wk (-59%), $59.9m total / Week 2
3. Resident Evil (Sony) 3,085 theaters, $12.8 million week (-28%), $142.9 million total / Week 4
4. Heart of the Beast (Par) 3,365 theaters, $10.9 million week (-28%), $53.4 million total / Week 3
5. The Forgotten Island (Uni) 2,898 theaters, $7.09 million week (-24%), $32.8 million total / Week 3
Earlier, Exclusive Thursday: Paramount/Legendary's PG-13 take on Capcom's Street Fighter video game got off to a good start Thursday night with about $4 million after a show time starting at 2 p.m. (Further boosted by the fan's 7pm showtime). The fisticuffs feature is expected to open north of $30 million. The cost of this picture is 82 million dollars, financed by Legendary and Capcom.
According to sources, Street Fighter's preview estimate is just under $5.2 million on Thursday, behind New Line's R-rated Mortal Kombat 2 , based on the Midway video game that came out in mid-May. One of the main differences between the two martial arts video games is that Street Fighter debuted in 1987, while Mortal Kombat followed in 1992 in pizzerias and arcades.
Mortal Kombat 2 earlier this year had previews starting at 3 p.m. With a first Friday of $16.8 million and a 3-day total of $38.5 million. There is currently a mid-autumn hiatus going on, which will hopefully bring some traffic to Street Fighter. Rentrak reports 21 percent of K-12 schools and 7 percent of colleges. Street Fighter previews are also ahead of Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog 2020 by $3 million, leading to a $20.9 million Friday debut and $58 million 3-day cume. However, that photo was aired in the frame of the President's Day holiday and received a PG rating. Critics scored Street Fighter a 47% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The three-hour documentary "You Can See Everything From A24," which is out of the gate because of the awkwardness, is taking in about $2 million in previews that began at 3 p.m. By comparison, the last documentary to post the decade's best start at the domestic box office was Amazon's MGM Studios' Melania, which opened to $7.1 million without previews.
Lance Oppenheim co-directed You Can See Everything with Nathan Fielder, a documentary that follows the late Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes before her time in federal prison. Oppenheim's previous film, also his first narrative feature, primetime this fall, posted $2.7 million in previews. It started at 4 p.m. and went on to open to $18.8 million. Conservative estimates heading into this weekend suggest you could see everything in the high single-digit range, but confidence is rising that critical acclaim (100% fresh RT and 98% audience RT score) could open to $10 million, surpassing Melania's previous domestic opening record for a documentary. You can see the whole thing was shot over four years and cost less than $10 million and had a marketing budget of less than $10 million.
Focus Features' Sense & Sensibility and 20th Century Studios' Whalefall also held previews today, both starting at 2 p.m. Sources estimate it to be around $1 million each. We'll have the official stats reported by the studio on Friday morning.
Sense & Sensibility is expected to open around $8 million, while Whalefall , based on the Daniel Krauss thriller, will open Friday-Sunday with $11 million. Sense & Sensibility is 76% fresh with critics, while Whalefall is 70% fresh.

Whalefall is shockingly awesome and moving. Austin Abrams should be nominated for an Oscar.
They are adding the You Can See Everything shows in Houston because they are selling out. We hope it can exceed even those ambitious predictions.
>Gen-Z'ers came out in droves with 75% under the age of 35 in Los Angeles and New York. These are the ones the rest of us hate.
Whale Horoscope "Nobody wants to watch him get eaten by a whale." However, the audience score on RT is 82%. So people who watched it loved it. I loved it - surprised it turned green. The biggest problem is the lack of visual variety and they should have gone with him and thought out loud Lynch style DUNE.
A 30 million opening is pretty good considering the Mortal Kombat reboot (considered to be a "good movie") followed by a worldwide total of around 85 million.
