Max Payne and its sequel, Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne, are two of the most groundbreaking third-person shooters in video game history.
These titles put the Finnish studio Remedy Entertainment in the spotlight as one of the most exciting game studios. Therefore, making the third part of this trilogy would have been a big challenge for any other developer. However, if you have titles like GTA and Red Dead Redemption under your belt, you will probably try your luck in this area.
That's exactly what former Rockstar Games VP and Max Payne 3 writer Dan Houser had in mind, and while he enjoyed the game's development process, he now admits that the title fell short of what it should have been. Despite receiving positive reviews, the game, released in 2012, performed poorly commercially and was not widely accepted by players. Although Max Payne 3 is an excellent shooter in its own right, some questioned whether the tone of the game lived up to its heavily noir predecessors; Because he had replaced the dark, introspective and strange atmosphere of Remedy's games in New York with a more exciting, colorful and completely action-packed approach.
Houser told IGN media in part of the IGN30 Icons special:
It was a linear game, so writing the story for it was a bit different than an open-world game and had a more defined structure. I really enjoyed that experience. I loved what we did in the design department; The fact that the game didn't have loading screens made it feel like a 12-hour movie, as did some of the visual work we did with the words on the screen. I felt like we were creating a compelling digital noir experience, but the consensus at the time was that people hated it.
So I was completely wrong. I know Sam Lake [creator of Max Payne] very well; He is a very nice person and really talented. I thought we did a good job of making another Max Payne game. Some people liked it; Not many others. So we were wrong, or should I say I was wrong. I failed. My contribution to this project was not successful. The game is beautifully made, but not as successful as it should have been. So I can say that a big part of this failure is on me; Both as a decision maker and as a writer, because people really missed his (Sam Lake) writing style.
Max Payne 3 is definitely different in tone than its predecessors, but it still has a lot of fans and enthusiasts. The game Max Payne 2 is still considered one of the popular games to this day due to the storytelling in its dark and dark world; But there's no denying that Rockstar Games added something new and impressive to the collection by taking the character to Brazil nearly a decade later.
However, using the Bullet Time feature in this game is still as enjoyable as ever, and if this level of quality and visual refinement is transferred to the remake versions of the first two parts of this trilogy that are being developed by Remedy, the moment must be counted to experience them. The latest news about this project dates back to more than a year ago; At the time the studio announced that the game was in full production and the partnership with Rockstar Games was still close and productive.
