Brandon Sanderson's Roshar "War" Kickstarter Passes $1 Million on Day One

Brandon Sanderson and Brotherwise Games have officially launched the Kickstarter campaign for War of Roshar, a new strategy board game. Sanderson calls this "huge" leading up to the campaign, and fans seem to agree. Over $1 million has been pledged on the first day with 23 days to go.

War for Roshar, in collaboration with Brotherwise, joins Cosmere's growing collection of board games. IGN got an exclusive first look at the game earlier this year, and we liked what we saw. It is a massive war game that balances strategic analysis and abstract gameplay. The theme of the game is deeply rooted in Sanderson's Stormlight Archive series and includes a lot of art from over 30 different artists.

If you are looking to support this project, there are a number of options available. Outstanding commitment, called the Fifth Ideal, is what gets you almost everything. Priced at $295, this tier includes the base game, hero development, 3D components, custom card sleeves, and wooden tokens. You'll also get a few different miniatures for Cosmere RPG, including Mistborn miniatures from Era 1 and Era 2 to accompany that game's upcoming expansion.

If you don't mind extra additions to your Cosmere RPG game, the other four levels provide a variety of these. For the base game only, you can pledge $90 to get access to the retail version as soon as it ships.

As for when the game will actually be released, the campaign includes an estimated delivery date of November 2027. This will likely vary depending on where your game is being shipped to, but Sanderson has a reputation for delivering high quality products on time for all crowdfunding projects.

I will when the proper board game comes along

This is far from the first crowdfunding project with which Sanderson has had significant success. Just earlier this year, he launched a massive campaign for a Hoid storybook series that ended up raising over $11 million. IGN's Jordan Comstock caught up with them upon their arrival and has no regrets about his choice to support the project.

And prior to that project, Brotherwise Games originally pledged $15 million for the Cosmere RPG in 2024 via Kickstarter. So while War for Roshar is off to a great start, we'll have to wait and see if it has the potential to become Sanderson's most successful crowdfunding campaign of all time in his Cosmere universe.
