Emphasizing that many teenagers are stepping down a path that may turn into a deep well with the idea of "just trying it once," a psychologist warns that this curiosity, along with being in high-risk friendship groups, is the most important starting point for drug use.
According to Ambassador Arjan's report, Ambassador Arjan Mehdi Mohammadi said about the main factors of some people's tendency to experience drug use: Although economic disturbances can be the cause of this issue, usually the first experience of drug use is not caused by a single factor. This situation is the result of the interaction of several individual, family and social variables that come together.
He added: The first factor during adolescence and youth is the presence in friendly groups and the environment of individual growth. The existence of friends who are consumers, friendly compliments and normalization of consumption in the environment are among the most important reasons for starting. The results of extensive studies in the country show that home and friends are the most common place to experience the first consumption.
Pointing to the role of curiosity, this psychologist said: The second factor is curiosity, many teenagers are looking for new experiences in the path of growth. Thinking that "I'm just going to try once" is the starting point that leads a person down a hole that may turn into a deep well.
Domestic research has also shown a significant correlation between curiosity and early initiation of drug use. The third factor leading to consumption experience is psychological pressure. Daily stress, emotional problems of adolescence, depression, anxiety, feeling of hopelessness, personal conflicts and some psychological disorders make a person vulnerable to drug use and can be a sign of danger.
According to him, the existence of family problems is another important factor. Poor parental supervision, severe conflicts in the family, living in single-parent families, i.e. families where one parent carries the burden of life, or families with a history of substance abuse, are strongly associated with risky behaviors and the initiation of substance abuse. The general tendency to seek excitement and risky behaviors is also effective, so that the early use of cigarettes and the desire for activities that have high excitement make a person more exposed to the experience of drugs.
This psychologist pointed out: Finally, economic pressure, unemployment and social exclusions are also another factor. Of course, economic pressure is not the only explanation, because not all low-income families are involved in drug use, but this pressure increases the risk of addiction to drugs by creating chronic stress, hopelessness about the future, and reducing social opportunities.
Mohammadi stated: Usually, one-time and sudden consumption does not turn into dependence, but often goes through a cycle and a process; A cycle of psychological learning, brain changes, environmental conditions and emotional needs that a person is looking for.
This psychologist continued: When a person has a pleasant or relaxing experience and uses it to manage his bad mood, the frequency and amount of consumption increases, so that a craving and a habit gradually arise in the person and his personal control decreases. In the beginning, a person may only use at parties, with friends, or on special occasions, but if the substance creates a positive experience such as pleasure, energy, relaxation, or anxiety reduction, the brain learns that use is a quick way to change the mood, and this is the same process of reinforcing behavior that increases the likelihood of repetition. According to him, in the next stage, the motive of consumption changes from having fun to regulating emotions, that is, a person uses drugs as a tool to regulate his emotions. For example, when a person is anxious, lonely, has financial pressure, or has a family conflict and insomnia, he turns to drugs to calm his feelings. At this stage, the drug is no longer just to create a good mood, but it is a drug to escape from a bad mood, and this "negative reinforcement" is considered one of the important mechanisms in the continuation of consumption.
Referring to the role of environmental stimuli, this psychologist stated: At the same time, environmental stimuli such as seeing consumer friends, going to places of consumption, weekends and holidays or even playing a certain type of music can activate the desire to consume. This is why a person initially thinks that they can stop using whenever they want and control themselves, but they find that it is very difficult in certain control situations.
With repeated use, tolerance develops in some drugs, that is, the previous amount no longer has the same effect as the previous one, and the person must increase the amount of consumption to achieve the previous effect. Also, stopping or reducing consumption after continuous use can cause withdrawal symptoms, and the World Health Organization considers tolerance, withdrawal symptoms, strong desire and difficulty in controlling drug use as important characteristics of dependence and addiction. Mohammadi emphasized: continuous consumption does not necessarily mean consuming every day. A person may say that he only uses drugs on weekends, but the fact that he cannot spend a weekend without drugs shows that this behavior is repeated over and over again. Important signs of dependence include things like loss of control, prioritizing drug use over other activities (prioritizing use over other activities) and continuing to use drugs despite negative consequences.
