Autumn Onion Planting Begins in Hormozgan

Farmers in Hormozgan have begun autumn onion cultivation on 8,900 hectares of the province's farmland.

Hormozgani farmers started the autumn cultivation of onions in eight thousand and 900 hectares of agricultural lands in the province.

According to Ambassador Arjan, Hormozgan Agricultural Jihad Organization's Agriculture Director predicted that around 450,000 tons of onion crops will be harvested from the province's agricultural lands, which is no different compared to last year.

Seyyed Reza Amirizadeh pointed out that onion production in Hormozgan is 9 times the province's needs and added: the harvested product is sent to the whole country, including Afghanistan, Iraq and the Persian Gulf countries.

Onion cultivation continues until December.

He said: Farmers use the high-yielding and marketable cultivars Taki, Rio Bravo, Skore and Nickerson for cultivation, which are highly popular among farmers due to their adaptability to the hot and humid climatic conditions of the province and their resistance to pests.

Hormozgan Agricultural Jihad Organization director added: Bandar Abbas and Minab cities are the most important onion growing areas.

Onion harvesting season starts at the end of December and continues until the middle of May next year.

Hormozgan ranks second in onion production in the country.
