The new live-action Moana will premiere exclusively on Disney+ on October 21, the broadcaster announced today.

The new interpretation is based on the original animation, which Disney+ says is the streamer's most-watched movie of all time, with more than 1.5 billion hours streamed worldwide.

Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui in the new film, while Kathryn Lagaia stars as Moana, the "brave pathfinder."

Synopsis: "In Disney's live-action reimagining of the beloved animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Laga'aia) answers the ocean's call and, for the first time, travels beyond the island reef of Motonui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson for those who can't rest on their travels).

The film features classic Moana songs including "How Far I'll Go" and "I Am Moana" to the new song "Along The Way." To celebrate the premiere, Disney+, Disney and Heal the Bay—a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to safe, healthy and clean coastal waters and watersheds in Greater Los Angeles—are teaming up for a special community beach cleanup on Saturday, October 17.
