The first two films under Paramount's new Warner Bros. merger, Legendary's Street Fighter via the Melrose lot and Clockwork, a limited 4K re-release of Ken Russell's 1971 Demons, hit theaters this weekend, a future of my favorite titles on top of each other.
Skydance CEO David Ellison was eager to merge the two historic studios in order to compete in a changing entertainment business. And scale up, Ellison is achieving.
For the period January 1 to October. At 11 domestic box offices for Paramount and Warner Bros. with $941.6 million, it was fourth behind Universal ($1.86 billion), Disney ($1.6 billion) and Sony ($1.37 billion). The billion mark remains for the new Skydance with six Paramount/Warner Bros. films slated for release this year, including next weekend's DC genre title Clayface , WB's family-friendly animation Cat in the Hat (Nov. 6), Paramount's Johnny Deep edgy Ebenezer . Dune: Part 3 (December 18), the family title The Angry Birds 3 (December 23) and Mr. Irrelevant (December 25). Capcom's fisticuffs classic video game feature Street Fighter is expected to take the No. 1 global and domestic spot this weekend with $30 million. An average domestic and international start of $30 million leading to a global opening of nearly $70 million or more. Comparisons are often made between the 1987-born arcade game and its rival, the 1992 martial arts video game Mortal Kombat. However, when it comes to box office movies, we'd like to avoid Street Fighter to the more recent Mortal Kombat movies, which opened to $23.3 million in 2021 (which was a covid-19 release on HBO Max) and last summer's sequel, which opened to $38.5 million in North America. That's because Mortal Kombat was R and Street Fighter is PG-13, so there's an opportunity worldwide to bring in families and young men under 18. Also, Street Fighter is less violent. Mortal Kombat II undelivered overseas next domestically, $49.8 million to $79.8 million. The hope and plan is to make Street Fighter playable to a much wider age group. Watch on Deadline
The top pick for men 25+ and under 25 is in the co-financed Legendary, made with Capcom for $82M nett. Street Fighter is the first theatrical release under Legendary's new global distribution deal with Paramount. Booked in 3,500 theaters and heavy on Imax and PLF, the Kitao Sakurai-directed film has yet to receive a critical score from Rotten Tomatoes. Previews begin Thursday in the US/Canada at 2pm with a fan event at 7pm featuring bonus films and giveaways.
Street Fighter is going anywhere overseas, except for China, where Paramount doesn't have the rights. Predator Badlands seems to be the right comparison, opening $31.2 million overseas. Street Fighter should catch on in Latin America, especially Mexico and Brazil, the UK, Australia, as well as Asia where the game is popular. No headwinds are expected from local fare in Korea or Japan.
Meanwhile, we hear that Warner Bros.' unearthed Catholic satanic film Demons is playing 350 games this weekend in key US/Canada cities. The Devils is the first feature for Christian Parks' frosh auteur label.
Also bowing at 20th Century Studios is Daniel Krauss' survival thriller Whalefall , with $11-12M domestic in 3,000 theaters, and about the same overseas, with WW opening on the high end of $24M. Whalefall stars Austin Abrams, who plays Resident Evil, as well as Josh Brolin and Elizabeth Shaw. A net production of $60 million was made here in the Golden State. Comparable overseas are 20th Century Amateur ($14.8 million overseas debut) and Sending Aid ($19 million). The indoor launch has 500 PLF screens including Dolby, 4D and D-Box. Directed by Brian Duffield, the film is going overseas everywhere except Denmark, which opens on October 22. Previews begin Thursday at 2 p.m. Best Picture PG-13 with women under 25 and men over 25 in first choice.
In more diverse bookings, Focus Features' remake of Jane Austen's Sensation and Sensibility starring Daisy Edgar Jones and Caitríona Balfe opens in 2,436 theaters with an $8 million domestic outlook for Universal Working Title's $20 million average. It's a wider opening for Sense Sensibility against the working title and Focus, Austen's pre-Covid Emma, which opened at its widest point with 1,565 theaters, recording a $4.8 million opening weekend in March 2020, just before all theaters closed. Best first choice with women over 25, followed by women under 25. Previews for the PG-rated film begin tomorrow at 2pm in the US/Canada. Sense and Sensibility is currently rocking the U.K., Norway, and France with a total of $8 million overseas. Georgia Oakley's movie, directed by Georgia Oakley, will face Germany and Australia tomorrow. 76% of comments are fresh. The previous Oscar-winning version in 1995, starring Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet and directed by Ang Lee, had a 97 percent approval rating on RT.
With a very good shot to over-execution, A24 Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder's Doc You Can See Everything follows Lance Oppenheim and Nathan Fielder's interactions with the late Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes before her time in federal prison. High single digits is what it looks like for North America right now, but if Gen Z is on board, that number could top $10 million in 800 theaters, which would be amazing. The latest documentary, Melania, opened with $7 million in 1,700 theaters, the best opening for a documentary in a decade. You can see the whole thing in almost half that number of theaters with hundreds of shows selling now. Forty-four reviews at RT are at 100%.
Also on the road this weekend at 1200 is Angel Gomez Hernandez's Crawlers. After a $27.8 million opening, Universal and Blumhouse's D+ CinemaScore horror film Other Moms is expected to drop 60% to -70% in its second frame after opening at No. 1 in North America. Other Moms has grossed $33.5 million at the domestic box office as of yesterday.
