One Word for Peace, One Word for Ruin: How Does the Prophet of Mercy (PBUH) Find His Way into Our Homes Today?
Sometimes the bitterest wounds of life come not from major events but from harsh words exchanged at home and among the people closest to us. A place that should be a sanctuary of peace sometimes becomes a field of complaint and resentment. Yet the conduct of the Prophet of Islam (PBUH), messenger of mercy and kindness, offers families another path: dialogue infused with respect, tolerance, and affection. Revisiting the Prophet's (PBUH) treatment of his wives and children is an opportunity to find answers ...
According to the Missionary Thought and Culture Base, sometimes what disturbs the peace of a family is not the big problems of life, but harsh words that are spoken in a moment of fatigue and anger. A home that should be a safe haven for family members may become a tense environment under the shadow of blame and aggression. In such a situation, rereading the biography of the Holy Prophet (PBUH), the prophet whom the Quran introduces as "mercy for the worlds", can be a way to restore kindness to family relationships; But how can prophetic ethics be brought from books and narratives to everyday life?
According to Abna's narration, for many people, the house is a refuge from the difficulties and fatigue of life; Where family members are expected to feel safe, heard, and find comfort in each other's company. However, sometimes daily pressures, work fatigues and the accumulation of annoyances turn this safe environment into a tense one.
A father who returns home after hours of work may begin his conversation with a complaint rather than a sincere conversation. A mother who has been involved in the responsibilities of the house and family all day, may speak to her children in a louder voice than she wants out of exhaustion. In such an environment, children may gradually replace talking with shouting and consider harshness as a normal way to express their wishes.
This image is not unfamiliar to some families; But the question is how to stop the cycle of bitterness and annoyance and give the house a peaceful color again? One of the ways forward is to return to the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) and recognize his way of dealing with his family and those around him. A model in which kindness is not a ceremonial behavior, but a basic principle in relation to others.
A prophet who showed mercy in his behavior
In the Holy Qur'an, God introduces the mission of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) with the title of mercy for the world and says: It means "And We did not send you except as a mercy to the worlds" (Surah Anbiya, verse 107).
This verse not only expresses the position of the Prophet (PBUH), but also draws our attention to an important truth about his mission: Mercy should be manifested in behavior, speech and the way of communicating with people. The Prophet, who is presented as the embodiment of divine mercy, also presents a model of tolerance, good behavior and respect for others in his relationships.
In another verse, God says about the way the Prophet (pbuh) dealt with people: "What is the mercy of God for them, and even if you were rude, your heart would not flow from you"; That is, "Because of God's mercy, you became lenient with them, and if you were hot-tempered and hard-hearted, they would have dispersed from around you" (Surah Al-Imran, verse 159).
This verse reminds one of the most important principles of human communication: gentleness and kindness can bring hearts together, while unnecessary harshness and harshness can create distance and break. Such a principle becomes doubly important in the family environment where its members have an emotional and continuous bond with each other.
From love to children to respect to wife
The biography of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) shows that his kindness was not limited to a specific group. Treating children, women, friends and even opponents was in a framework of respect and tolerance.
In the reports related to the life of the Prophet (PBUH), it is stated that he used to greet children, treated them with affection and took time to communicate with them sincerely. The Prophet's (PBUH) love for Imam Hassan (PBUH) and Imam Hussein (PBUH) also has a wide reflection in Islamic narrations and tells about his interest and attention to children.
These behaviors show that in the prophetic view, children were not just people who needed to be obeyed and educated; But they also deserved love, attention and respect. This point is important for today's families; Because the relationship between parents and children is not only formed by providing material needs and setting rules, but also requires emotional presence, listening to their words and treating them respectfully.
Humility and participation in household affairs had a significant place in the family life of the Prophet (PBUH). In the quotes related to his biography, it is stated that they relied on themselves in some personal tasks and helped the family in household affairs. This behavior presents an image of family life based on responsibility and avoiding self-exaltation.
Respecting one's wife and avoiding bad language is also one of the principles emphasized in Islamic teachings about family behavior. In such a model, the home is not an arena for imposing the will and proving the superiority of one person over another; Rather, it is an environment for companionship, mutual respect and sharing of responsibilities.
The Prophet (PBUH) also cared about consulting and listening to the words of others in relation to his companions. Paying attention to the audience, not interrupting the speech of others and observing respect in the conversation are among the features that have been considered in describing his moral style.
The behavior of the Prophet (PBUH) with the opponents was another manifestation of this moral character. In the historical reports related to the conquest of Mecca, their forgiveness and forgiveness are emphasized; An approach that shows that even in a position of power, one can avoid revenge and humiliating others.
What was the secret of the influence of the words of the Prophet (PBUH)?
One of the important aspects of the life of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) is the way he speaks and communicates with others. Good manners, measured speech, respecting and paying attention to the audience's words are some of the characteristics that are emphasized in the description of his behavior.
The first characteristic was good manners. Dealing with a smile can reduce the distance between people and make the conversation more intimate. Sometimes, before the words can leave an impact on the audience, the facial expression and the tone of speech convey the message of respect or disregard.
Another feature was seriousness in speech. A speech that is clear, calm and appropriate to the situation provides more opportunity for mutual understanding. On the other hand, hurrying, shouting and using derogatory words may affect the essence of the message and make the audience react to the speaker's tone instead of listening to the content.
Respecting people is also very important. Addressing others with insulting words or repeatedly reminding them of past mistakes not only does not help resolve the conflict, but may increase resentment and resentment. On the other hand, a dialogue based on respect and clear expression of the problem increases the possibility of reaching an understanding.
Listening is also an important part of effective communication. Sometimes people wait for an opportunity to give their answer rather than listening to the other party's point of view. However, listening carefully to the words of your spouse or child can help you better understand their feelings and needs.
These principles are also applicable in today's life. Many family disputes escalate when people blame each other or respond harshly to each other instead of talking about the problem. Therefore, modifying the way of conversation can be one of the first steps to reduce tension in the family.
A sentence can increase or decrease the spaces
Words are not only means of conveying wishes and information; They can convey a feeling of security, respect, affection or, on the contrary, fear and contempt to the audience. A calm and respectful sentence may pave the way for a lengthy dispute, while a harsh one can turn a small annoyance into a full-blown conflict.
In family relationships, this issue is more important; Because family members often face each other in similar situations and the effects of words and behavior accumulate over time. Repeated blame and disrespect may undermine trust, but respectful dialogue provides more opportunity for conflict resolution and intimacy.
The Holy Qur'an says in Surah Baqarah, verse 83: "Say good things to people"; It means "speak well to people". Also, in Surah Taha, verse 44, Prophet Moses (pbuh) and Aaron (pbuh) are ordered to speak softly to Pharaoh: It means "speak softly to him".
The Qur'an's emphasis on eloquence and gentleness in speech shows that the manner of speech is also important in Islamic ethics. If in religious teachings, it is emphasized to be gentle even in the face of opponents, it seems necessary to pay attention to this principle in close family relationships as well.
Of course, kindness does not mean ignoring mistakes or overlooking important issues. It is possible to talk about problems with a firm attitude and at the same time maintain the dignity of the other party. The difference between assertiveness and harshness is in this point: assertiveness is based on clearly stating the problem and setting boundaries, but harshness may be accompanied by humiliation and damage to the relationship.
Kindness One of the criteria of morality in the family
In Islamic hadiths, kindness and tolerance are important moral values. In the narrations attributed to the Holy Prophet (PBUH), it is emphasized on loving friendship and gentleness and its role in the beauty of behavior. The theme of some of these narrations is that kindness makes human behavior more beautiful and being deprived of it can become the basis of wrong behaviors.
In prophetic teachings, good behavior with family also has a prominent place. The theme of the famous narration "The best of you is the one who is better for his family" is a reminder that good morals should not be sought only in social behavior and dealing with people outside the home. The way a person behaves with the closest people in his life is also an important criterion for measuring his moral character.
Sometimes a person controls his anger and speaks carefully to maintain the respect of others in the workplace or community; But at home, due to intimacy or fatigue, he is not as careful with his words. However, family members also need respect, attention and emotional security more than anything else.
In Islamic traditions, it is also emphasized on showing mercy to people. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) says in a famous hadith that he who does not show mercy to people will not be shown mercy. Also, in another narration, they say the purpose of their mission is to complete the virtues of morality.
These teachings show that morality is an integral part of religion. Commemorating the name of the Prophet (PBUH) is accompanied by following his way of life when respect, fairness and kindness are also present in our daily behavior.
The distance between religious belief and daily behavior
Now the question is raised, to what extent the moral teachings of the Prophet (PBUH) are manifested in our daily life. Do we speak with our spouse and children as respectfully as we are careful with our words when dealing with strangers? When angry, do we give ourselves time to calm down, or do we let anger dictate our words? Do we adhere to the principles that we defend in speech in the street, workplace, public queues and virtual space?
These questions do not mean to ignore the difficulties of life. Economic pressures, fatigue, job concerns and multiple responsibilities can affect people's moods and relationships. However, knowing these factors is beneficial when it leads to finding a way to manage them and improve relationships.
Sometimes there is a gap between believing in moral values and implementing them in life. We may talk about the kindness of the Prophet (PBUH), but in the moment of disagreement, we use hurtful words instead of tolerance. We may emphasize the importance of respect, but take the opportunity to speak up when hearing a dissenting opinion.
