Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Barcelona; Interesting architecture of a religious structure (+ photo)
Today, the Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel juxtaposes two different periods of Barcelona's religious architecture: a place of worship with its 19th century roots and a more recent building that was built in response to the needs of a densely populated neighborhood.
Ambassador Arjan - The Church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Barcelona, Spain, is an example of the development of religious architecture while preserving a historical monument; A complex whose roots go back to the 19th century and was expanded in the 1980s with the construction of a new church.
This complex is located in the El Carmel neighborhood of Barcelona; A neighborhood that takes its name from the old shrine of this area. The first religious building of this place was built between 1860 and 1864 in the form of a small place of worship. Over time, this shrine became one of the religious and social centers of the neighborhood, and in 1962, it got the title of local church.
With the increase in the population of the neighborhood, the small space of the old synagogue did not meet the needs of the residents. For this reason, between 1985 and 1988, a new church was built next to the old building. The design of this architectural development was carried out by Michel Campos Pascual and Francesc Daumal y Domenac. The new building was opened on July 16, 1988.
The architectural importance of this complex is not limited to the construction of a new church; The contemporary building is located next to a shrine whose history is connected with the formation and growth of El Carmel neighborhood. After being damaged in 1936, the old shrine became a place of worship again in the post-war period and was restored in 1998.
