Critics' opinion about Treasure Island series

Rotten Tomatoes: 7 reviews - 14% score

Metacritic: 5 reviews - 52 points out of 100

80/100 – Radio Times Critic: Jack Seale

This collection is an eye-catching and well-crafted adventure that, along with its charms, also has a sharp and dangerous edge.

60/100 – Collider | Critic: Charlie Ridgely

The changes made at the beginning of the story have a very positive effect on the overall narrative; But the big surprises planned for the second half almost derail the entire series. Perhaps, with these changes, the creators have also considered the possibility of making a second season; A decision that does not seem unreasonable considering the final scenes of this season.

Stretching the classic story to the point of a pirate sword blade, focusing on the wrong details, watering down essential characters and adding contrived events, this series fails to be engaging enough to keep even the most loyal fans with it to the end.

40/100 – Screen Rant | Critic: Grant Hermans

David Oyelowo clearly enjoys playing his role and most parts of the series also show that no expense was spared to make the story seem grand and adventurous, inspired by the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson. However, most of the changes are not only not innovative, but more like predictable additions, apparently intended to avoid too much repetition of previous adaptations. This made me wonder how much Murphy really cared about the original work.

40/100 – Wall Street Journal | Critic: John Anderson

Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson would probably have been surprised to see David Oyelowo as Long John Silver; A choice that is considered one of the successful changes of this six-part series despite his dramatic exaggerations in the performance of the role. However, changes made to a classic are expected to make it more interesting, edgy, or relevant to today's audiences.
