Doug Belgrade, Netflix film VP, fired

The executive had been with the streaming giant since 2024, when he was hired by film chief Dan Lin.

As part of Netflix's biggest restructuring in four years, film director Doug Belgrade has been fired, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.

Belgrade has served as the right-hand man to film boss Don Lane since he joined the streaming giant in 2024 after a long stint at Sony, including as president of Columbia Pictures. His hiring was Lane's first major executive move at the time after he replaced CEO Scott Stuber in the role of overseeing all movies at the streaming giant.

Belgrade had just announced the debut of Ben Affleck's "Animals" at its world premiere in Los Angeles earlier this month, and was a key part of managing Netflix's massive slate of original films.

On Wednesday, Netflix co-chairmen Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters informed employees that it would lay off 1,000 employees, about 6 percent of its workforce. "We know that such changes are difficult, but let's stay focused," the note said. This is one of the most dynamic times in entertainment history – and a moment that's perfectly suited for a company like ours, built at the intersection of technology and entertainment. Now it is our duty to step forward and meet together, as always, for a moment."
