Letitia James vows 'fair' investigation into Cornell 7 after Trump questions her impartiality
James vows to conduct an impartial investigation as scrutiny increases over comments he made before taking the job.
New York Attorney General Letitia James on Friday vowed to conduct a "fair" investigation of seven defendants accused of sexually assaulting an unidentified woman at a Cornell University fraternity party.
James' special investigation into the college's alleged "gang rape" comes amid a recent lawsuit against Cornell University, the Chi Phi fraternity and several others, which has thrust the Ivy League university's handling of campus sexual assault into the national spotlight.
The comments to a reporter come as James has repeatedly deflected questions about his impartiality, insisting the investigation is driven by facts and evidence — not politics.
Court documents: Letitia James faces new pressure to remove her from Cornell sexual assault probe over alleged bias
"Letitia James is a corrupt person," Trump said. He's totally rotten, and I can't imagine it. And I feel bad for whoever he looks up to, because they don't budge. Letitia James is a corrupt person.
Attorneys for two of the defendants are also seeking James' dismissal, including Andrew Miltenberg, representing Gilio Lopes, and Tenny Geragos, representing Winston Lee. Defense attorneys point to a social media post by James that Geragos argued separately in a court filing showed he was "undoubtedly biased."
Just days before Hochul's date, James posted on X in support of the alleged victim, identified in court filings as Jane Doe.
"What this young woman has had to endure is horrific and unacceptable. James posted on September 28th in X I will keep him in my heart and in my prayers. To her and to all survivors: you are not alone. We are with you."
Hochul has backed James' appointment amid criticism, saying he has "full confidence" the attorney general will "look at the facts, review the record and come to the appropriate conclusion."
Meanwhile, James has denied allegations of bias in the case, saying during an attorney general campaign debate that his comments in support of the alleged victim were meant to show "empathy" and insist that "politics stop at the door of his office."
Cornell's sexual assault allegations prompted New York Attorney General Letitia James to launch an "active criminal investigation."
The case stems from allegations by a Cornell student that he was gang-raped more than two years ago, in 2024, at a party at a Chi Fei fraternity house. Cornell University police provided her six-page sworn statement to the Tompkins County District Attorney's Office. Prosecutors declined to pursue charges at the time, concluding that the conduct described in the statement did not provide sufficient evidence to support criminal charges under New York law.
Cornell separately conducted a Title IX investigation that led to disciplinary action against several of the seven defendants, including the expulsion of two students and the suspension of two others.
