Kioxia has introduced a faster version of the GP series SSD that can perform more than 20 million input and output operations per second (IOPS) for 512-byte data blocks. This speed is almost double the performance of the version that the company introduced in August 2026. By developing its high-speed flash memory, Kioxia plans to provide a solution to compete with DRAM memory in the artificial intelligence infrastructure market.

The previous version of GP1 performed about 10 million I/O operations per second. The new version with the third generation of XL-FLASH memory technology increases the reading speed by about three times and the writing speed by about 150% compared to the previous generation of this memory.

Kioxia is trying to close the performance gap of this type of storage with DRAM memory by developing faster flash memory so that it can be used in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

In the third generation of XL-FLASH, Kioxia has reduced the length of the Word and Bit wires to reduce the delay caused by the resistance and capacitance of the circuit (RC Delay). This generation also has more memory pages per chip format than the second generation which used 16 pages.

The first generation GP1 uses multi-level memory cells (MLC) where each cell stores two bits of data. The drive also features faster SLC mode, a 16-page layout, and a read latency of less than five microseconds.

The previous GP1 uses the PCIe 6.0 interface and the NVMe 2.2 protocol and is designed to allow GPUs to directly access storage. The stated durability for this model is up to 50 full write capacity per day (DWPD). Kioxia has not yet announced the durability of the upgraded version, and it is not clear whether this model will also retain the PCIe 6.0 interface.
