While Matt Reeves has stepped away from the Batman: Part II project for family reasons, Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to help and offer to take over as director on an interim basis.
According to Ambassador Arjan, quoted by World of Reel, Steven Soderbergh has stepped in to complete "Batman: Part II" because Matt Reeves has been away from the project due to family reasons.
Soderbergh has directed a variety of films; From low-budget, small and mid-budget films to high-budget films, then the film is in safe hands.
Production on the film was halted earlier this month in London so Reeves could attend to a serious family situation. Now, with about 6-7 weeks left to shoot, Soderbergh, a long-time admirer of Reeves' work, has reached out to him and offered to help him finish the film. Reeves will stay in touch with him throughout the rest of the shoot and will return to oversee post-production once it's ready.
DC Studio announced in a statement that Soderbergh himself contacted Reeves and that the two will work closely with the actors and crew of the film to realize Reeves' vision.
Soderbergh expressed his opinion as follows: I think the work of Matt Reeves in the movie "Batman" was stunning; Deliberate, specific and completely coherent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to produce segments that integrate seamlessly with what has already been filmed so that Matt can properly finish his film.
This last sentence says it all. Soderbergh hasn't stepped in to put his stamp on the film and plans to act as an assistant and film what Reeves had planned and no doubt storyboarded. Few directors today are as accomplished or as technically versatile as Soderbergh, and if anyone can match another filmmaker's eye without leaving his fingerprints, it's Soderbergh.
Reeves also explained in X that he will still be working on the film's production, just not on set, but after principal photography is finished.
He wrote: Just to be clear, I am not leaving "Batman Part II". I am deeply grateful to Steven for helping me complete principal photography during this challenging time. Thank you all for your concern and well wishes.
Soderbergh is an Academy Award-winning director best known for Traffic, Erin Brockovich, Sex, Lies and Videotape and Ocean's Eleven. His latest published works include "Christopher", "Black Bag", "Presence" and "John Lennon: The Last Interview".
In "Batman: Part II" Robert Pattinson appears again in the role of Bruce Wayne, and Scarlett Johansson and Sebastian Stan are also among the actors. The first part of this movie recorded sales of 770 million dollars worldwide in 2022.
This movie is scheduled to be released on February 18, 2028 (29 Bahman 1406) and it seems that it is still too early to say whether this interruption will affect the release time or not.
