Paramount's "Street Fighter" video game adaptation should lead the pack of newcomers. The film grossed $4 million at the box office in Thursday previews and is expected to gross $25-35 million in its debut. Capcom, the legendary video game maker, financed the film for $82 million, and Paramount only paid for distribution. Directed by Kitao Sakura, this new take on the classic fighting game stars Noah Centineo, Andrew Koji, Kalina Liang, Jason Momoa, 50 Cent and more as colorful fighters who face off in a high-profile tournament. Disney's "Whalefall" grossed $900,000 in Thursday previews and is looking for a second-place finish with $10-12 million for the weekend. Directed by Brian Duffield, Austin Abrams stars as a diver who is swallowed by a giant sperm whale and must find a way to escape. It cost $60 million to make, but positive reviews for this claustrophobic thriller should give it staying power. Popular in Variety
A24's highly anticipated Elizabeth Holmes documentary You Can See Everything earned $1.75M in previews and is in third place with $7-8M, a stellar debut for a nonfiction documentary. The film cost just $7 million to make and has since started generating hype, making a surprise appearance at last month's Telluride Film Festival. Directors Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim secretly filmed Elizabeth Holmes before her 11-year sentence and even lived with the infamous Theranos founder to gain complete access to her life. The film is expected to be a rare box office documentary and could even be in this year's Oscar race.
The latest newcomer this weekend is Focus Features' Jane Austen adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, which took in $25 million and is on track for a $5-8 million weekend. It grossed $1.15 million from previous screenings and previews. In this new take on the classic novel, Daisy Edgar Jones and Esme Creed Miles star as Eleanor and Marianne Dashwood, who pursue love, loss and financial uncertainty as they are forced to leave their family estate in Sussex.
