The College Football Playoff doubles.

After just three years of the 12-team CFB playoffs, the field will expand to 24 teams starting in 2027.

Signs have long pointed to an expansion, but now the final piece of the puzzle has fallen into place with ESPN making the jump. This drastic change in sports is taking shape in a hurry.

Sources have confirmed with OutKick's Terry Wallace that a meeting between representatives of ESPN and the College Football Playoff will take place on Thursday, where a deal between the two will be finalized that will see ESPN purchase the additional games that come with the expanded tournament. ESPN's current deal to broadcast the College Football Playoff runs through 2031.

With the addition of playoffs, it is safe to assume that 2026 will be the last year we will see conference championship games in the Power Four and Group of Six conferences. Additionally, there will be fewer bowl games starting in 2027.

Sources also confirmed with Wallace that the 24-team playoff bracket will feature 19 at-large bids, with one automatic bid for each of the Power Four conferences and a fifth and final automatic bid to a six-team team.

One of the most intriguing wrinkles to the extended playoffs is that the first two rounds of the postseason will be played on campus, according to sources.

Aside from the move possibly marking the end of conference title games, it could signal a new era in the Big Ten where teams must commit to tougher non-conference play. Sources tell Wallace that Big Ten teams could add a Power Four opponent to the calendar.

The SEC made a proactive move before the current college football season by moving to a nine-game conference schedule.
