Georgia Tech standout linebacker Kyle Efford's playing career is over, but his leadership role for the Yellow Jackets will continue.

Afford announced Tuesday that he will be medically retired from football, but will remain with the program, retaining his role as team captain and assuming player and coaching responsibilities for the rest of the season.

Efford aggravated his surgically repaired shoulder during Week 2's game against Tennessee. He led the Yellow Jackets in tackles each of the past three seasons and finished his college football career with 250 tackles.

"Over the past few years, my body has taken more damage than I can ignore," Afford said in a statement. An injury that still reminds me of a sport I have loved for so many years. And while my heart and mind still have more to give, I've come to a point where I have to think about the life ahead of me."

Efford acknowledged that retirement was not the end he envisioned, but said he leaves with no regrets.

"This is not how I imagined my football career to end, but I'm at peace. I can say with full confidence that I gave every single one of myself to this game. I have nothing left in the tank and no regrets in my heart."
