Google's Fitbit lineup expanded Monday with the introduction of the Fitbit Edge, a new wearable that sits between the Fitbit Air and the Pixel Watch.
Priced at $179.99, it combines the Fitbit Air slim band with an OLED display for map directions, notifications, weather, and music controls.
Like the Pixel Watch and Fitbit Air, the Edge works with Google Health Coach powered by Gemini. (You'll need a Google Health Premium subscription to use it.) Coach can use your fitness, health, and medical data to compile weekly routines and workout plans, then tailor them to your schedule.
It also features Google's Health Watcher, which is designed to detect significant changes in health metrics over time, including indicators of blood pressure and insulin resistance. (The company announced these features at the Pixel Watch 5 launch event in August.)
Google says the Fitbit Edge can automatically recognize and record 100 activities, including running, cycling and walking. The company explains that it uses the context of your movement rather than what you do and adds it to your weekly goals. Additionally, the device supports more than 50 exercise modes and can display on-screen notifications during exercise, such as tap to push harder or take a breath.
The company claims the Fitbit Edge's built-in GPS is 40 percent more accurate than the previous generation, making it easier to track outdoor runs. Google says sleep stage detection is also 15 percent more accurate than previous generations, helping the device provide better sleep summaries and training tips.
Meanwhile, the battery is rated for up to seven days on a single charge, and the wearable is water-resistant to a depth of 50 meters.
Fitbit Edge is available for pre-order through the Google Store and will be available in stores on October 27.
Color choices include Obsidian, Fog, Olive and Canyon. There is also a special Stephen Curry edition for $219.99.
