When a lie is repeated so much that it becomes the truth; Behind the scenes of conspiracy theories
Why do some people believe strange and unsupported claims and see every new event as a sign of a hidden conspiracy? Conspiracy theories sometimes turn into a seemingly coherent narrative for their audience by constantly repeating and linking unrelated events together; A narrative that may strengthen previous beliefs instead of searching for the truth.
If a claim is so strange that the majority of people say "this is too ridiculous", maybe the target is not that majority at all. "Stealing rain clouds", "chemtrail", "extraterrestrials", "microchip in vaccine", "controlling humans with 5G" or the claim of "changing DNA with vaccine"...
Claims for which there is no credible evidence, but have been repeated so often that for some they have become the reality of a "global conspiracy".
In politics we see similar patterns: a "hidden enemy" to explain everything, a person or political movement to solve all problems, or a media that highlights only part of the reality.
The problem starts when every new event, instead of challenging our narrative, becomes evidence to confirm it.
Then we are no longer looking for the truth; we are looking for things that prove that we were right from the beginning.
Perhaps the strangest part of the story is this: sometimes a narrative finds its audience precisely because of its strangeness.
