Katie Zacharias has stepped down as White House press secretary
Within 5 days of work, he faced tough questions about whether he had misrepresented himself as a lawyer.
The New York Times reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that new White House press secretary Katie Zacharias was fired after less than a week on the job.
The firing comes hours after Trump invited Zakaria to reconsider whether he was fit for the job.
"I told Katy if you don't want to do it, don't do it," Trump told reporters Friday, adding that the media had "treated him really badly" in his first week in the role. I told him honestly, if I were you, I would reconsider.
Trump opened the door for Zacharias to step down amid scrutiny over whether he embellished his credentials. He had described himself as a lawyer and the president had called him a "lawyer". Asked in which state he passed the bar exam on Tuesday, he replied: "When I moved to China."
Zacharias, who graduated from Pepperdine University School of Law, later confirmed that he took the California bar exam but failed. "I've never come across as someone who's a lawyer," he said in an interview with Real America host Jack Pozobek on Thursday.
"Why get into this long, drawn-out definition of the difference between a solicitor and a solicitor, because I don't think most people see much of a distinction," he said. "Why didn't you just say, 'I've never practiced law?'
Trump said Zakaria may be transferred to another position in the White House.
"We're talking about doing something," he said. "I want him to have a good life."
Anthony Scaramucci, who lasted 10 days in the post before Trump fired him, quipped of Zacharias' firing: "Records are going to be broken."
"But I don't enjoy other people's pain," he added.
