Paramount has acquired the rights to the popular book series Red Rising, and The Hunger Games director Francis Lawrence has been tapped to make a film based on the first novel in the series.

According to Ambassador Arjan's report, Justin Rhodes is in charge of writing the screenplay, which will be an adaptation of Pierce Brown's original novel, published in 2014. Lawrence and Cameron McConomey are producing for About Blank, along with Francesco Goodhuis. Pierce Brown will also serve as an executive producer.

The story of Red Rising takes place in a science fiction future; An era when humans have colonized different planets and society is governed by a class system based on colors. The members of the red class, who live in poverty, work as slave labor in the mines of Mars, while the golds rule the solar system with their super physical strength and go to war with each other.

This Daru book series by Lycus follows a miner who, after experiencing a great loss, embarks on a path of revenge and rebellion against the gold class. In order to infiltrate the ruling class, he goes through a cruel and exhausting process to become a golden himself. He then enrolls in a military school and joins other young people who have to pass difficult tests to get to the highest ranks of the golden class.

So far, the Red Rising series includes six books, which include Golden Son, Morning Star, Iron Gold, Dark Age, and Lightbringer, in addition to the first novel. The seventh and last book of this series, entitled Red God, is being written and published.

Francis Lawrence has a lot of experience in turning bestselling novels into movies. He has directed all of the films in The Hunger Games series and produced works such as the prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, which is set to be released next month, and the 2023 film The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Lawrence also directed another film adaptation of Stephen King's work, The Long Walk, last year.
