The world of No Man's Sky is about to get smaller - but in a good way. Hello Games has announced that its long-running sci-fi exploration game will be coming to iOS, with versions for iPhone and iPad available on October 28.

According to Hello's Sean Murray, the mobile version of the game is essentially the full No Man's Sky experience. "I guess I should say it's not No Man's Sky Lite," he wrote in a blog post. It includes all the many, many updates to the game that have been released since launch - such as last year's giant Voyagers expansion - and the only major features missing are multiplayer and planetary settlements. Murray likens the iOS version to when the game originally launched on the original Switch. "On Switch we've listened to players and built from there, including with a highly developed version on Switch 2," he says. "Based on feedback and player numbers, we'll support iOS in a similar way."

The game runs on iPhone 11 and 3rd generation iPad Air and above, and the studio says it downloads at a staggering 5GB. It also features redesigned touch controls, as well as support for controllers, screen casting, and mouse and keyboard on iPad. Murray also notes that "perhaps most importantly, we've worked hard on battery life and thermodynamics, and we're very proud that No Man's Sky can be enjoyed for very long and comfortable gaming sessions." It will be a "free trial" at launch, though it's unclear how much the full version will cost.

It's been a decade since No Man's Sky first came out, and the game has changed dramatically since its launch. iOS joins a huge list of supported platforms, including Mac, PC and basically every modern console, and a VR version is also available. Just as importantly, Hello has continued to keep the game alive with a steady stream of free expansions, including the recent Cosmos update in September, which opened up a vast expanse of space with more to explore.
