Analyst estimates show that sales of Ghost of Yotei are behind Tsushima but still strong on PS5

Ghost of Yōtei seems to be lagging behind Ghost of Tsushima in sales, but that doesn't mean it isn't still hitting big numbers on PlayStation 5.

Ghost of Yōtei seems to be lagging behind Ghost of Tsushima in sales, but that doesn't mean it isn't still hitting big numbers on PlayStation 5.

According to Rhys Elliott, head of marketing analytics at Alinea Analytics, who shared the data on Sucker Punch Productions' 2025 sequel on X/Twitter. Although this is sales information that has yet to be confirmed by Sony, we may be getting a look at how Ghost of Yōtei will perform on the PS5.

Conclusion: The action follow-up to Sucker Punch has done well in its first year, even if it hasn't quite managed to outdo its predecessor. Alinea's analysis puts Ghost of Yōtei at around 5.4 million units, earning $407 million so far. Highlights of that update show a physical cut of a significant 36.8%, while PlayStation Store discounts are largely reduced.

About 500,000 copies were sold in the third quarter of 2026 alone. Alinea also reported that 50,000 players have picked up the full digital version — which comes with new content, including the recently released Echoes of Sekigahara expansion — in the two weeks since PlayStation launched it as a digital replacement for the base game. With analytics estimating that around 6% of its current base has returned to stream new content, Ghost of Yōtei appears to be going strong – but there's more to the story.

Ghost of Tsushima, which opened in a market still struggling with pandemic lockdowns, had grossed about $418 million in its lifetime at the same point as of July 2020, Elliott added in a follow-up post. Taking into account Yōtei's $70 base price versus Tsushima's $60 base price, as well as subsequent discounts, it is estimated that the latter has sold approximately 7 million copies to date.

That leaves Tsushima moving at a much faster pace in terms of raw units sold, but there's a lot more at play here, especially given the nearly neck-and-neck earnings.

How does Ghost of Yotei's revenue compare to Tsushima?

Our estimates (@alineaanalytics) show that Yotei earned $407 million. At this point, Ghost of Tsushima, which matched its launch, earned $418 million, up about 3 percent.

Since the Yotei is $70, and has only had two discounts, and the Tsushima was $60 at launch (and had already been discounted to $45 less than three months after launch), the Tsushima would have sold more copies at this point. Almost 7M vs Yotei's 5.4M.

That's roughly 26% more revenue per buyer, which is in line with PlayStation's goal of extracting more revenue per player.

While the gap in terms of copies is huge, it's worth noting that by this point in Tsushima's lifecycle, there were about 117 million PS4s and 10 million PS5s in the wild, compared to roughly 100 million PS5s now (Yotei's only platform).

That said, Yotei's revenue is starting to drop more than Tsushima, but perhaps the influx of new GTA-based PS5s will slow it down.

Yotei has proven to be an evergreen seller in a busy place, despite only two small discounts and competing against one of the busiest and most high-quality release calendars...so far, it's moved 1.8 million copies this year ($121 million in revenue).

So yeah, anyone who says Ghost of Yotei is a flop is dead wrong.

(Note: the Y-axis starts at $392 million. Otherwise, the chart would be unreadable because the numbers are so close)

While the gap in terms of copies is huge, it's worth noting that at this point in Tsushima's lifecycle, there were around 117M PS4s and 10M PS5s in the wild, compared to nearly 100M PS5s now (only the Yōtei platform explained). However, Yōtei's revenue is declining relative to Tsushima's, but perhaps the influx of new GTA-based PS5s will alleviate this situation.

In other words, even though Ghost of Tsushima has managed to move more versions since its launch, Ghost of Yōtei has still held its own. Early post-launch estimates for the sequel were also in line with the original game, with Sony confirming in February this year that the follow-up had outsold Tsushima and contributed significantly to its financial results for the quarter. As Eliot explained today, "Anyone who says Ghost of Yōtei is a failure is dead wrong."

When do you want the PlayStation 6 to arrive?

2027, I'm already itching for new hardware!

2029, by which time I might have saved enough money.

Ghost of Yōtei launches in October 2025 and is exclusive to PS5. IGN gave it an 8/10 review, saying, "A predictable but well-executed story takes you through beautiful scenery and satisfying, fluid UT action – it may not revolutionize open-world gaming, but it's a great distillation of samurai fantasy." It recently added a new armor set based on the PlayStation game The Last of Us.
