"The Mummy": Brendan Fraser's Sequel Gets New Title Ahead of 2027 Release
Rachel Weisz and John Hannah will also reprise their roles in the latest installment of the Universal franchise.
Brendan Fraser's next installment in Universal Pictures' hit franchise, The Mummy is alive and well.
The studio announced on Thursday that the new movie will be titled The Mummy: Book of the Dead. Radio Silence's Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillette are set to direct the film from a script by David Coggeshall (Family Plan). It hits theaters on October 15, 2027, exactly one year after the title was announced.
Fraser returns as Rick O'Connell alongside Rachel Weisz as Evie O'Connell. John Hanna, Michael Johnston, Numan Akar, Kevin J. O'Connor and Oded Fehr are the actors of this movie.
The classic Universal Monster feature was first brought to life with Boris Karloff in the title role in 1932's The Mummy. After several offers over the decades, the Frasier & Wise franchise began with the 1999 version of the same name under the direction of Stephen Summers.
On the 25th anniversary of The Mummy in 1999, Summers told The Hollywood Reporter that he remains pleased with the film's lasting cultural impact.
"It's so funny that it never went away," said Summers, who also directed the 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns. "It's always somewhere on TV. And I know, especially because the checks left are great. I hate to say it, but somehow, it's become popular with a lot of people."
