The OnePlus 16 launched in China today, the company's first flagship phone since exiting the US and European markets this summer. As luck would have it, it looks to be the company's best phone in a while.
Like most OnePlus phones, the 16 packs a punch with a Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 chipset and up to 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM. The battery is backed by a 9,000 mAh carbon silicon battery, one of the largest ever seen in an Android flagship. 100W wireless charging and 50W wireless charging complete the power setup.
On the display front, the phone moves to a 185Hz OLED panel for the first time. Not only is it used for 185fps gaming in compatible titles, but it can run up to 165Hz throughout the system's UI – a first for high-refresh-rate panels like this.
Even the cameras, which aren't usually OnePlus' strong suit, have gotten a significant upgrade. The main camera has a higher resolution (200MP), a larger sensor (1/1.4-inch type) and a faster aperture (f/1.4) than the OnePlus 15. That should help, given that we found the phone's camera had "boring imitations in low light." 50MP ultrawide and telephoto cameras round out the rear triple, with the latter getting a big bump to the 1/1.95-inch sensor.
Design flourishes too, with the phone's silver finish featuring LED lighting that features a large 16-digit number and what the company claims is a set of galactic coordinates. While the shape of the lights is fixed, they will reportedly flash in different rhythms to notify you of calls, messages, battery level and more.
The OnePlus 16 is available in China for ¥5,699 (about $850). With OnePlus no longer in the US or Europe, there's no hope of the 16 coming to either market.
