EXCLUSIVE: Jude Law may be a Tottenham Hotspur fan, but he could be heading to Anfield for his next role.
The Black Rabbit star is set to star as legendary Liverpool FC manager Bill Shankly in a series from A24 and teenage writer Jack Thorne.
The football club revealed in 2024 that it is teaming up with A24 Beef and Margo's Got Money Troubles producer and Box to Box Films, which produced Drive To Survive, on the project.
The series charts Shankly's rise, helping the club rise from the old Second Division before winning three First Division titles, two FA Cups, four Charity Shields and the UEFA Cup. Set against the backdrop of Liverpool's vibrant 1960s boom in music and culture, the drama examines a pivotal period in the club's history, charting its journey from a struggling team to a global powerhouse with over 400 million followers worldwide and recognized as one of sports' most iconic institutions. Tom Werner, best known for producing series such as Roseanne, The Cosby Show and the recent Netflix reboot A Different World, has been chairman of Liverpool FC since 2010.
He told Deadline that he believes the series could become similar to The Crown. "It's a story about family and relationships through the lens of a football club," he said.
Shankly, or Shanks as he was commonly known, became manager of Liverpool in December 1959. He was also responsible for 'You'll Never Walk Alone', his anthem dropped in 1974 after winning the FA Cup in 1974, and died seven years later at the age of 68.
Bill Shankly understood that it wasn't just about finding the best talent in the team, it was about connecting with the fans and the reason why Liverpool is so special to me, apart from the fact that it has arguably a billion fans worldwide, is that the relationship between the club and its fans is truly unique. Can touch things like the Beatles.
Shankly's granddaughter Karen Gill, author of The Real Bill Shankly, is also involved in the project, which will be filmed in Liverpool and at Anfield, the club's old home.
If successful, Werner added, it would be second only to the Hillsborough disaster, the deadliest in British sporting history, which killed 97 people and injured more than 750, in 1989 when Liverpool played Nottingham Forest at the Hillsborough Stadium in Sheffield.
Thorne, himself a Liverpool fan, has written the first two episodes and Werner and his team have opened talks with broadcasters. "My feeling is that if you don't do more in the first episode than show 50,000 people singing 'You'll Never Go Alone,' I defy anyone who isn't moved by that scene," he added.
