Champions League Week 2: Several Good Matches, Several Low-Key Games
Week two of the Champions League continues tonight and tomorrow with several matches.
The second week of the European Champions League will be followed by several games tonight and tomorrow.
According to Ambassador Arjan, the second week of the European Champions League will be held tonight and tomorrow night. We don't have a very sensitive meeting tonight. Maybe Barcelona's game at Galatasaray can be considered attractive. Tomorrow night, Manchester City-Paris Saint-Germain and Roma-Real are more attractive.
Paris Saint-Germain has won the Champions League twice in a row after winning the penalty shoot-out against Arsenal in the final of last season and is one of the main contenders for the championship this time as well. Real Madrid was the last team to win the Champions League for 3 consecutive seasons and did so in 2015-2016, 2016-2017 and 2017-2018 seasons.
This Spanish giant, along with its rival, Barcelona, along with a group of Premier League clubs, will be one of the main contenders for the championship in the 2026-2027 season. This time, the top 5 English teams will compete in the group stage of the league. Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are the main contenders for the championship, and Manchester United are chasing them along with Aston Villa.
Bayern Munich have not won the Champions League since 2020, but will undoubtedly be among the contenders again this season, while Serie A clubs Inter Milan, Como, Napoli and Roma hope to end a 17-year wait for an Italian title.
Lance's match against Sporting Lisbon is not a match between two strong teams, but both teams won in the first week. Sporting beat Galatasaray 3-1 while behind, and Lance beat Slavia Prague 3-2 with 2 extra-time goals.
Sabah play for the first time at home in the Champions League in the other game earlier on Tuesday, when they host Slavia Prague. Slavia has a long trip to East Azerbaijan for this game. After losing 4-0 in Old Trafford, Sabah will experience its first hosting in the history of this competition. The air route of this trip is estimated to be around 3,000 km and the land route is estimated to be around 3,719 km.
Atletico Madrid - Manchester United
Manchester United also have a tough job ahead of them and travel to Atletico Madrid for the most spectacular game on Tuesday. They have never beaten Atlético in four attempts (D2 L2), and have only faced Sevilla more times (5) in this competition than they have ever won. This match may sign the dismissal of Michael Carrick from coaching Man United. Eddie Howe is in line to be replaced. Diego Simeone's team won only 2 and lost 10 in their last 15 games against English opponents.
The other English team that will play tonight is Arsenal, who are looking to extend their winning streak in the league stage. They last failed to win at this stage of the Champions League in November 2024 and started this season with a 1-0 win at Napoli after winning all eight of their league games last season.
They will host Lille in the first ever meeting between the two clubs and Olivier Giroud, who recently returned to the side, will be hoping to feature for the visitors against his former side. He could become only the third player to score for and against Arsenal in the Champions League, after Tomas Rosicky and Eduardo da Silva.
Lille were last unbeaten in a Champions League game against an English side in November 2005 and are expected to continue their seven-game losing streak against Premier League opposition here.
Flick's Barcelona scores a lot against all teams. In the first week, they beat Feyenoord 5-1. Their only enemy in tonight's game is the terrible atmosphere in the home stadium of the Turkish opponent.
Since Flick took over, Barcelona have scored 80 goals in 27 Champions League games, averaging 2.96 goals per game, the highest goals-per-game ratio for any club with more than 20 games under a particular manager in the competition's history.
Galatasaray have won just one of their last 22 games against Spanish opposition, with their last victory coming back in April 2013 against Real Madrid when they narrowly ended in the second leg of the quarter-finals.
The two teams who are looking to make up for the defeats of the first game will face each other at San Siro, and Inter will host Club Brugge. Inter lost 2-1 to Real Madrid after two glaring mistakes led to goals, while Brugge lost 3-2 at home to Aston Villa.
The two teams have never met in any competition before, so there is no history in that regard, but Brugge have a poor record against other Italian sides, winning just one of their last nine games. That win was last year: a 3-1 win against Atalanta in the Champions League play-off round in February 2025.
Another one-sided game is expected in Norway as Bayern Munich travel north to face Vikings, who play a home game in the Champions League for the first time since 1992-93 (before the group stage was added).
They started their first appearance in the group/league stage last time out with a defeat against Stuttgart and this time around they are facing tougher and tougher German opponents. They have lost all four of their games against Bundesliga teams this century, while failing to score in 3 of them; Except for the last elimination game against Stuttgart.
Bayern has scored 30 goals in 9 games against Norwegian teams.
The last 2 games on tonight's schedule will be a more balanced contest. Villarreal has a better chance to win against Napoli. Part of this may be because Napoli are winless in their last eight games against Spanish sides in the Champions League (D2 L6), with their last victory coming back in 2011-12.
Thus, the yellow submarine has a good chance of avoiding an unwanted record; If they lose this match, they will become the first Spanish team to suffer eight consecutive defeats in the European Club Cup or Champions League.
Leipzig will be looking to make amends for last season's humiliating 4-1 defeat against Como. However, Leipzig have lost eight of their last nine Champions League games; Of the teams that have played multiple seasons since the start of the 2024-2025 season, only Slovan Bratislava (100%) have a higher losing percentage in this competition than them (89%).
It's a good chance to get a positive result in the table, facing a PSV team that has never won in 10 away games against German opposition in the Champions League or European Club Cup.
Liverpool enters this match with a 3-0 home defeat against Manchester City. Iraola has yet to win at Anfield and tonight is a good opportunity for the Spanish coach. The Reds have won 25 of their last 29 Champions League group/league matches and are confident of winning this one too. Since 1991, no Austrian team has beaten an English club in a major European competition, and since then the teams have gone 34 games without a win (27 losses, 6 draws).
Cesc Fabregas' team will be waiting for another win in Rotterdam. Feyenoord struggled in their Champions League debut, losing 5-1 to powerhouse Barcelona in Spain, while Como beat Leipzig 4-1 at home in their Champions League debut.
Cesc Fabregas' men could become the third Italian team to win their first two games in the European Club Cup/UEFA Champions League after Sampdoria in 1991-92 and Verona in 1985-86.
The most important game of week two takes place in Manchester, where Enzo Maresca's Manchester City will host reigning league champions Paris Saint-Germain at the Etihad Stadium.
PSG have been in great form against English clubs in recent years. They could become the second team to go more than 10 consecutive games against English sides in the European Club Cup/UEFA Champions League, after Real Madrid between 2011 and 2017 (11 games) (currently unbeaten in 9 games; 7 wins, 2 draws).
If Holland scores in this match, (he currently has 36 goals in 40 games) he will overtake Sergio Aguero (36 goals in 64 games) and become Manchester City's top scorer in the Champions League.
Jose Mourinho, now back as Real Madrid manager, was in charge of Roma for two and a half years, from July 2021 to January 2024, leading them to their only major European trophy in 30 years, the Conference League title in 2021-22.
Roma have lost all of their last four Champions League games against Real Madrid without scoring a single goal.
Kylian Mbappe will play his 100th Champions League game and with 71 goals, only Robert Lewandowski (76) has scored more than any other player since his debut in the competition in September 2017.
Borussia Dortmund have a crucial game ahead of them away to Boudoir/Glimt in the second week of the Premier League and their current star player, Serho Girassi, could once again shine.
The Guinean striker has scored 19 goals in 25 Champions League games for the club, including two in their opening week win over Villarreal. He also scored on the wrong side of the net to set up a tense finish in a 3-2 victory, but he will be a player to keep a close eye on.
The Norwegian side are hard at home and have beaten Inter, Manchester City and Sporting Lisbon at the Aspira Stadium since their debut last season.
Aston Villa will look to continue their impressive run of wins in their last 10 European home games at Villa Park. Only twice this century has an English team enjoyed a longer home winning streak in major European competitions: 12 consecutive games by Manchester City (2024-2022) and Manchester United (2006-2008).
Since the beginning of last season, Villa has won more than any other team in major European competitions (16 games, 14 wins and 2 losses).
