Oh My God, Skydance Merger Kills South Park Discord

The administrators of South Park Discord have officially announced that they are shutting down the server, effective immediately. In a screenshot of the announcement, the volunteer committee shared that over the past two years, regular contact with employees of South Park Digital Studios and parent company Paramount has gone from weekly communications to gaps of up to six months or more.

"Paramount Digital Studios and South Park have effectively placed us in charge of their official property, leaving us to manage it without ongoing support," the announcement reads.

A recent update to Discord's bot policies resulted in one of the server's moderator bots going offline. Retrieving the bot required personal information that the team, who were volunteers and had experienced doxing incidents in the past, felt it was inappropriate to provide and contacted Paramount for assistance.

“We felt that […]Paramount, as the owner, should have completed this process,” the observers wrote. We did not receive any response.

The recent merger between Paramount and Skydance, which was completed last week, has only complicated matters. "We have exhausted all available avenues to try to make contact and the formation of Skydance (the Paramount-WBD merger) has come to this. Contact is now an impossible task." Kotaku has reached out to Paramount for comment.

The closure of the official South Park Discord is just one of the many negatives coming out of the merger. Another potentially merger-related event (although calling it "negative" is subjective) is the recent massive disclosure of Cartoon Network data. More than 200GB of information was leaked, including everything from the show's bible to background and character art files, storyboards, production guides and more. KFC Spain put together a video showing the leaked assets before it was quickly removed, presumably as a result of Skydance issuing a number of DMCA notices, although some X accounts have retained the video.

Earlier this year, Avatar Aang was also leaked, though that one wasn't Paramount's fault, according to a subsequent investigation that led to the arrest of a possible suspect. However, the closure is South Park Discord. With no communication from the parent company, and no ability to replace the missing moderation bot without significant effort and expense, the volunteer team decided to lock down the server in hopes that Paramount would contact it so it could be recovered.
