OpenAI warned its employees in security training courses that foreign spies may gain their trust and gain access to confidential company information by using emotional relationships or sexual offers. These warnings have become more important after the discovery of a hidden audio recording device in one of the meeting rooms of OpenAI executives.
One of the examples of espionage that the Wall Street Journal presents is related to the encounter of an OpenAI employee with an unknown person in a children's playground in San Francisco. The employee was with her child when the stranger started talking to her and then moved the conversation to her work at the artificial intelligence company. According to the Wall Street Journal, that person was actually a spy.
In these trainings, OpenAI has warned its employees about a method called "Honey Trap"; A method in which people attempt to approach their targets and obtain confidential information by using emotional appeal or the suggestion of sex.
To illustrate this risk, staffers are told the example of an American diplomat stationed in Russia that foreign spies were trying to get close to him by sending a blonde woman to his hotel room. After the diplomat refused to let the woman in, the Foreign Intelligence Service sent a red-haired woman and then a young man to get her attention.
According to the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI security experts have also introduced other methods to employees; including offering bribes and eavesdropping on conversations in public places such as cafes.
The company's recommendations are not limited to identifying attempts to establish suspicious relationships. Employees should use screen protectors to hide information on their mobile phones and laptops when working in public areas, and erase information written on whiteboards after meetings.
They have also been advised not to wear OpenAI-branded clothing in public to make them less likely to be identified and targeted. Reports indicate that other companies active in the artificial intelligence competition, including Anthropic and Google, have also issued similar security warnings to their employees.
These warnings have been raised in the context that American authorities had previously announced the discovery of a hidden audio recording device in one of the meeting rooms of OpenAI managers in San Francisco. The US Department of Justice has announced that this device was connected to the USB port behind the TV in the meeting room. According to the published documents, the device was hidden in a toilet paper to avoid attracting attention.
