Independent entertainment rights company Ovation Rights has entered into a long-term partnership with Grammy-winning artist and producer Alicia Keys to acquire the original Broadway production company's economic interests in her bio-musical "Hell's Kitchen," a deal that both parties say will effectively provide the production's investors "instead of waiting for future returns, over many years."

Ovation founders Jamie Hendry and Philip Green said in a statement that they "strongly believe in Hell's Kitchen and its long-term future" and that the Keyes deal "represents something we think could be important to Broadway. Investors have historically had limited opportunities to realize the value of their investment other than waiting for distribution over many years."

"We hope Ovation Rights can provide another path to liquidity by allowing investors to realize value and recycle that capital directly into new productions," they continued. Watch on Deadline

The specific dollar amounts of the deal were not disclosed, nor was the timetable for the payment to investors.

Created and inspired by Keyes, Hell's Kitchen ended a nearly two-year Broadway run last February 22, with the production expected to return about 60 percent of its $22 million investment to investors. It was expected that more efficiency would be obtained from international tours and productions.

The investment establishes Ovation Rights as a long-term partner in Hell's Kitchen while, the company says, demonstrates a model that could have broader relevance for Broadway by "providing another way for investors to realize the value of successful theatrical investments, while introducing patient, long-term capital for authentic productions."

Traditionally, investors in Broadway productions typically receive distributions from their investments for years beyond the original runs, through touring, international productions, and other spin-off rights. Ovation says it believes there is an opportunity to "develop a more active secondary market for theater investment: providing liquidity to existing investors while positioning for the long term in the future economy of proven theatrical assets."

Ideally, this model has the potential to help capital flow more freely "through the Broadway ecosystem," giving investors greater flexibility and the opportunity to reinvest in new work while introducing long-term capital to established productions.

"Dreaming big has always been at the heart of Hell's Kitchen — not only in the stories we tell, but in creating space on Broadway and beyond for new faces, new voices, and people who may never have imagined themselves a part of this community," Keyes said in a statement. "This partnership with Ovation Rights not only rewards the original investors, but also makes for a better new and original musical. People who take the same leap of faith in new works, new artists and "New members of the Broadway community are doing. I'm excited and inspired by what this partnership represents and the doors it can open."

In a separate statement, Hell's Kitchen executive producer Aaron Lustbader said, "As Broadway faces new challenges, the industry needs innovative ideas and new directions to serve the collective best interests of our investors, while accelerating their returns from what could otherwise be measured in decades to a much shorter time frame."

Lustbader said the Ovation-Hell's Kitchen partnership could set a new precedent for how Broadway capitalization "can blossom into meaningful returns on a faster timeline." The approach, he adds, represents "a truly modern approach to the current issues facing theater finance and will in turn represent a watershed moment for the industry at a crucial time".

Featuring music and lyrics by Keys and a book by Christopher Diaz, Hell's Kitchen opened to strong reviews on Broadway at the Shubert Theater in April 2024 after its world premiere at the Public Theater. Won two Tony Awards (out of 13 nominations). The musical is currently on a North American tour with "additional opportunities anticipated for the future development of the musical."
