Beauty Revealed is an 1828 watercolor by American artist Sarah Goodridge (pictured). The miniature portrait, which surrounds Goodridge's bare breasts with white cloth, is painted on a piece of ivory. It was originally backed with paper and is now in a modern frame. Goodridge made the breasts appear youthful and individual, using a frontal view that showed the area from the collarbone to just below the breasts. He gave the portrait to the politician Daniel Webster, who was a frequent subject and possible lover after his wife's death. He may be trying to provoke her into marrying him. Although Webster married someone else, his family kept the portrait until the 1980s, when it was auctioned at Christie's and purchased by Gloria and Richard Money. This painting was purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2006. The painting has been read as an erotic work and also expresses Goodridge's confident sexuality. (full article...)
