Ending the list Earlier on Friday, Trump told reporters that he had told Zakaria to "reconsider" staying on.

"I don't think it hurt Katie the way she did at the hands of the press," Trump said as he left the White House. "I told him, honestly, if I were you, I would think about it."

Zakaria said he received a call about the role last week. He succeeded Carolyn Leavitt.

Trump later announced his appointment and introduced him as an attorney. However, last week, questions were raised as to whether Zakaria, a graduate of the University of California's Pepperdine School of Law, actually passed the bar exam to practice as an attorney.

He lasted five days in the job, half the length of Anthony Scaramucci's tenure as communications director, who served 10 days in the first Trump administration.

Al Jazeera's Kimberly Halkett explained that the appointment and subsequent reshuffle could create more problems for Trump as Republicans prepare for crucial midterm elections.

"The fact that there was a major credit problem, as well as shaky performance, sealed his fate," Halkett says. "It makes the president look shocking at a time when he's already been criticized for not having a campaign that's really on track to win in November."
