«Mu'jam al-Mi'yari»: An Innovative Study of the Semantic Structure of the Quran
Khorasan Razavi – The book “Al-Mu'jam al-Mi'yari fi Tafsil Maqati' Suwar al-Quran al-Karim” was unveiled in Mashhad on the first anniversary of the late Mahmoud Rouhani, physician and Quran researcher.
According to the reporter of Iran's Ambassador Arjan in Mashhad, the commemoration ceremony of the first year of the death of Dr. Mahmoud Rouhani was held in Shahid Fakhrizadeh Hall of Imam Reza International University (AS) with the presence of a group of university professors, researchers and cultural and scientific activists. In this ceremony, in addition to honoring the scientific status and social services of the deceased, the book Al-Ma'jam Al-Ma'iari in detailing the sections of Surah Al-Qur'an Al-Karim was unveiled.
Abdulhamid Talebi, head of the scientific and cultural organization of Astan Quds Razavi, read the message of Ayatollah Maravi, the guardianship of Astan Quds Razavi, referring to the scientific and Quranic position of Dr. Rouhani.
In this message, Dr. Mahmoud Rouhani is introduced as one of the figures of the service of Islamic Iran in the fields of jihad and struggle, knowledge, culture and politics, and his position as one of the interdisciplinary researchers of the Holy Quran is emphasized.
In another part of this message, it is stated that the book Al-Ma'ajm Al-Ma'iari in detailing the sections of Surah Al-Qur'an Al-Karim is the result of a new research in Quranic studies, which uses statistical analysis methods to examine the sectioning of the Surahs of the Holy Qur'an and can be the basis for further systematic studies in this field.
Also, in this message, the publication of Dr. Rouhani's scientific works by the Astan Quds Razavi Islamic Research Foundation was noted, and the deceased's family and Mashhad University of Medical Sciences were thanked for their cooperation in publishing this work.

Ahad Faramarz Qaramelki, the CEO of Astan Quds Razavi Islamic Research Foundation, also pointed out Dr. Rouhani's scientific and personality dimensions and considered him as one of the scientists who was able to put his experiences in the fields of medicine, health and social studies to the service of Quranic research.
Referring to the extensive scientific, cultural, social and political activities of the deceased, he said: Dr. Rouhani was one of the first generation of interdisciplinary researchers in Quranic studies who presented a different approach in Quranic studies by using the achievements in the field of medicine and health, especially social studies of health.
The CEO of Astan Islamic Research Foundation, Quds Razavi, stated that Dr. Rouhani's scientific works have the capacity to create new research streams, and added: "The Al-Ma'jam Al-Ma'iari book, by examining the textual connections of the Holy Qur'an and the continuity of the verses, has taken into account important topics such as the division of surahs and the issue of the current order of the Qur'an."
Also, referring to the cooperation of the Astan Quds Razavi Islamic Research Foundation in publishing the works of this deceased researcher, Karamelki listed his hard work, hope, faith and humane outlook on society as his outstanding personality traits and emphasized that Dr. Rouhani used his capacities to serve in various scientific and social fields.

In the continuation of this ceremony, Hojjat-ul-Islam wal-Muslimin Mustafa Faqih Esfandiari, Deputy of International Affairs of Astan Quds Razavi, referring to the role of prophets in the flourishing of human intellect, said: One of the missions of the prophets (PBUH) is to reveal the hidden talents of humans and bring intellect from power to actuality. A process that provides the basis for the advancement of human status.
Referring to Dr. Rouhani's connection with the Qur'an and his scientific efforts, he added: One of the signs of the flourishing rationality of his personality was to speak less and avoid fruitless words. His words were selected, considered and had depth and accuracy. A person who spends his life on the path of friendship with the Qur'an and serving its teachings, does not disappear with the end of his apparent life, but his works and words continue to live.
"Ma'ajm al-Ma'iari" is one of the important written Quranic works of recent decades
Hassan Hakimbashi, a member of the board of trustees of Razavi's Astan Quds, also considered "Maajm al-Ma'iari" to be one of the three important scientific events in the field of written Quranic works in the last two or three decades, along with the interpretation of "Safir Arjan" and "Mushaf Mashhad Razavi".
He explained about the importance of this book: The structure and order of the Holy Quran is still one of the important subjects of Quranic research. Before, there were divisions called "Rukuat of the Qur'an" according to which the Qur'an was divided into about 587 parts or a little more; But the question is, have these divisions been done based on scientific principles and considering the semantic continuity of the verses?
The member of the board of trustees of the Astan Quds Research Foundation, Razavi stated that sometimes a verse has the capacity of several semantic parts and sometimes a collection of verses form a continuous semantic unit, and stated: Determining the semantic and structural boundaries of the Qur'an is a delicate and complex task and it cannot be done solely based on the number of verses. The importance of Dr. Rouhani's work lies in the fact that he has examined this issue with a systematic method and an innovative perspective.
Hakimbashi emphasized: The interpretation of "Safir Arjan" by Ayatollah Javadi Amoli, "Mushaf Mashhad Razavi" and "Maajm al-Maiari" are among the important works of this field. Every innovative research has the capacity to criticize, complete and develop, but the precision and scientific depth of Dr. Rouhani's work doubles its importance. This book, along with works such as "Maajm al-Ahsa'i", can be effective in the expansion of Quranic studies and provide the basis for the longevity of its author's name.
Publication of the book after years of research and revision
Mohsen Naji, a member of the writing team of "Ma'ajm Al-Ma'iari", referring to the continuation of Dr. Rouhani's scientific activities after his retirement in 2006, said: "He was still pursuing several research projects that we hope will be organized and published in the future." Rouhani was very thorough in reviewing and revising scientific works, and even after finishing the work, he repeatedly went back to the writings and made changes in them.
He added: Around the years 1396 or 1397, at the suggestion of Dr. Saket, meetings were held about a work entitled "Cultural Analysis of the Sections of the Surahs of the Holy Qur'an". Despite the follow-ups, the publication of the book was postponed many times and its introduction was still not prepared.
Naji, recalling a conversation with Dr. Rouhani, stated: One day when saying goodbye, he shook my hand and asked: "Naji, do you think this book will be published?" Will I see this book published?” I assured him that the book will be published; Because he had worked hard for it for about 20 years and the friends of Research Foundation will try to publish it.
Referring to the influence of Mohammad Taqi Shariati and the Motahari family on the formation of Dr. Rouhani's intellectual atmosphere, the member of the book writing team said: He had an independent personality in addition to these family ties, and he should be recognized as a person with a special scientific and moral identity. Before being a researcher and lexicographer, Rouhani was a noble and respectable person who valued others.
Naji also explained about the preparation of the final version of the book: the main part of the work is the result of Dr. Rouhani's research and writing, but part of the introduction and final corrections were done with the cooperation of friends and colleagues. My estimate is that about 80% of the content is written by him and the remaining 20% is the result of completion and corrections that have been made to prepare the ground for publication. It is important that this difference is clear to the readers.
The publication of this book is the great dream of his life
Afshana Shariati, the wife of the late Dr. Mahmoud Rouhani, also spoke about the difficulty of bearing this loss, pointing out that one year has passed since the death of her husband, and reminded that the works and memories of people are still present in the lives of the survivors even after they are gone.
Stating that he has closely witnessed his wife's years of effort, suffering, perseverance and tirelessness in the path of Quranic research, he said: Dr. Rouhani was one of the few people who had found his world and lived in it with beauty, patience and satisfaction; But fate didn't give him time to continue his research and scientific efforts for a few more mornings.
Referring to his wife's constant concern for finishing his research works, Shariati added: He always said to pray until my book is finished while I am alive. At the end of his life, when I told him that I pray to God that you will introduce your book, he replied, don't worry; Even if it's not me, I have reliable and scholarly friends who will finish the work.
The late Dr. Rouhani's wife continued: Today, our mourning hearts are comforted; Because his friends and companions finished the work and realized the great wish and concern of Dr. Rouhani for years.
Shariati also pointed to the good name and lasting works of his wife, and reminded that hearing others' good memories of him is a salve for the sadness of his loss.
In this ceremony, the various dimensions of Dr. Mahmoud Rouhani's activities in the fields of medicine, health, social studies, culture, and Quranic studies were noted; A personality who, in addition to academic activities, was also present in social and cultural fields.
The publication of research works in the field of the Holy Quran and the use of interdisciplinary approaches in examining the concepts and structure of surahs were among the axes that were emphasized in the speeches made in this ceremony.
