When buying a car, engine power and amenities usually get the most attention, but it's the transmission that largely determines the day-to-day driving experience, fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

In the Iranian market, despite the heavy traffic, hot summers, mountain roads, and the difference in the level of after-sales service, choosing between CVT, dual-clutch, and AT transmissions is more important. But which technology is more suitable for use in Iran and can one of these three options be considered the absolute winner?

The CVT gearbox, or power transmission with a continuously variable coefficient, has a different structure from conventional gearboxes. In this system, instead of a set of fixed gears, usually two pulleys with variable effective diameter and a metal belt or special chain are used. The continuous change of the transmission ratio makes the engine transfer the power to the wheels according to the driving conditions without noticeable gear shifting.

The most important advantage of CVT is the smoothness of movement and the possibility of proper engine speed management. In urban traffic, the driver usually does not experience the shocks caused by gear shifting and the car behaves smoothly. On the other hand, this gearbox can keep the engine in the appropriate rev range and help reduce fuel consumption in many economy cars. Of course, the amount of savings depends on the weight of the car, engine power, gearbox settings and driving style.

Despite these advantages, CVT is not necessarily the right choice for all drivers. When pressing the gas pedal suddenly, the engine speed may increase, while the vehicle speed increases with a delay. This behavior, sometimes known as the elastic effect, is a performance characteristic of many CVT transmissions and is not a sign of failure in itself. Also, some of these gearboxes are not designed to withstand high pressure and high torque transmission; Therefore, their ability should be checked according to the engine and the weight of the car.

In Iran, a quality CVT can be an economical and comfortable choice for people who drive mostly in the city. However, its proper maintenance is very important. Using the wrong oil, neglecting periodic services, and continuous pressure beyond the capacity of the gearbox can increase the possibility of failure. In addition, it should not be assumed that CVT repair is always cheap. The final cost depends on the type of failure, the price of parts and the access to an expert repairman.

Dual clutch transmission or DCT uses two clutches to manage two sets of gears; One for odd gears and another for even gears. In this way, when the car is moving in one gear, the next gear can be ready in advance so that the change can be made at high speed. This feature has made the dual-clutch transmission an attractive option for sports cars and many models equipped with turbocharged engines.

Fast gear shifting and proper power transmission are the most important strengths of this technology. In road driving and when overtaking, a well-built DCT can respond well and provide enjoyable acceleration. In many examples, the efficiency of power transmission is also favorable, although the actual performance depends on the design of the gearbox and its coordination with the engine.

But to choose DCT, you should know the difference between dry and wet types. In the dry dual clutch transmission, the clutches are not immersed in oil for cooling; While in the wet type, the clutches are in contact with the oil. Wet models usually have advantages for heat management and higher torque transmission, but this does not mean that all wet gearboxes are definitely superior to dry models. Build quality, cooling system and electronic settings still play a decisive role.

One of the challenges of some double clutch transmissions in Iran is heavy traffic. Continuously moving at low speed, stopping and starting in succession and trying to keep the car steady on a hill with the gas pedal can increase the pressure and heat of the clutch. In some models, this condition is accompanied by start-up shudder, erratic operation, or an overheat warning.

Of course, not all dual-clutch gearboxes can be considered problematic. A properly serviced DCT can provide years of satisfactory performance. An important issue for the Iranian buyer is to check the exact type of gearbox, its technical history and access to parts and expert repairmen. In a car where parts are scarce, even a limited breakdown can lead to huge costs and waiting time.

In the comparison between these three technologies, AT usually means the conventional automatic transmission equipped with a torque converter. In this structure, the torque converter makes the power transmission smoother when starting the movement, and the set of planetary gears provides the car with different transmission ratios.

One of the most important strengths of this gearbox is its proper performance in traffic and when starting to move. The driver usually does not face the direct engagement of the clutch in the way of a double-clutch gearbox, and the car moves smoothly. For this reason, the conventional AT is used in many family cars, SUVs and models suitable for everyday use.

Of course, AT gearboxes have also changed over time. Older models with a limited number of gears may be more fuel efficient or slower to respond than newer models. On the other hand, modern gearboxes with more gears and torque converter locking system can provide good efficiency. Therefore, the high fuel consumption or the slow response of the car cannot be attributed to all AT transmissions.

In terms of maintenance, this technology is not immune to failure. Problems with the torque converter, internal assemblies, hydraulic system or electronic control can be costly. But some conventional automatic transmissions have more familiar repairmen and more accessible parts due to their history of wider presence in the market; An advantage that can be very important in Iran. Of course, this situation is not the same for all imported and assembled cars.

To choose a gearbox, the actual conditions of using the car should be considered. In urban traffic, the conventional AT usually offers the right combination of smoothness, ease of driving and predictable behavior. A CVT is also a good choice for quiet and economical driving, while some DCTs, especially dry models, may be more sensitive to clutch temperature rise at low speeds in long traffic.

In mountain and uphill routes, the actual capacity of the gearbox and how to use it becomes important. In double-clutch cars, you should not use the gas pedal to keep the car on the slope for a long time; It is better to use the brake and avoid putting unnecessary pressure on the clutch when starting to move. In CVT and AT gearboxes, it is also necessary to choose the appropriate driving mode, pay attention to the vehicle's capacity, and avoid continuous pressure beyond the power transmission system's capacity.

Warm air alone is not enough reason to reject a technology. The design of the cooling system, the quality of the oil, the technical condition of the vehicle and the amount of pressure applied to the gearbox determine how this set will work at high temperatures. A proper transmission that is properly maintained will not necessarily suffer from driving in hot climates.

The more important issue is the actual cost of ownership. The price of standard oil, access to parts, the number of expert repairmen and the failure history of the same gearbox model can be more important than the name of the technology. For this reason, when buying assembled or imported cars, in addition to the type of gearbox, you should also research about the service schedule, consumable parts and the possibility of basic repairs.

If a buyer drives mostly around town and values smoothness, comfort and predictable maintenance costs, a high-quality, well-serviced conventional AT transmission is usually a logical choice. This gearbox behaves well in traffic in many cars and is considered a balanced option for daily use.

If fuel economy and smooth driving are the main priorities, a quality CVT can be a better choice, provided that its capacity matches the engine and weight of the vehicle and the necessary services are performed on time. On the other hand, buyers who prefer acceleration and quick gear changes can go for DCT, but they should consider the dry or wet type, the traffic conditions of the place of use and the after-sales service situation seriously.

Ultimately, none of these technologies is an absolute winner. A well-made CVT can outperform a poor AT, and a quality dual-clutch transmission won't necessarily be expensive and troublesome. In the Iranian market, the best gearbox for every buyer is a model that suits his driving style, has good technical quality, and its parts and repair services are easily available.
