Prosecutors said Day, who was born male and identified as female, had been taunted earlier that day for using the women's restroom at McDonald's, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Prosecutors said the earlier incident frustrated Day, prompting him to discuss the taunting with Day's wife.

The victim, who reportedly did not know Day, approached the family as they walked down East 87th Street.

The two started arguing after comments were made about Dee's gender. Although Day's wife tried to separate them, the fight continued and the man eventually pushed Day and then walked to a gas station across the street.

Day followed him and the encounter turned violent, prosecutors said.

After the stabbing, Day allegedly called 911, claiming he was injured in self-defense, but left the area before officers arrived.
