The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says it's evaluating claims that about 1,000 Tesla robot taxis using its self-driving system exceeded "posted speed limits in active school zones." Waymo's robotaxis have faced similar investigations, including for illegally passing a school bus and hitting a child near a California elementary school.

The Office of Defect Investigation (ODI) received a DP on September 23, 2026 requesting an investigation into the Model Year (MY) 2026 Tesla Robotaxis (Model Y and Cybercab) engaged with the Automated Driving System (ADS). Petitioner alleges that ADS exceeded posted speed limits in active school zones.

The Cybercab was launched earlier this year and is currently under scrutiny for its lack of side mirrors, pedals and steering wheel. NHTSA has also opened an investigation into Tesla's full driving system for traffic violations, such as running red lights and driving on the wrong side of the street.
