'Dateline' NBC Goes to Canada

The top-rated American true-crime series, hosted by Canadian native Keith Morrison, will premiere its local version on November 26 on Citytv.

NBC's top-rated true crime series Dateline is getting a Canadian spin-off series north of the border starting Nov. 26.

Keith Morrison, who got his start in journalism in his native Canada, will be in Toronto on Wednesday to promote the first international expansion of the Dateline franchise as part of a licensing deal with Rogers Studios. Dateline Canada on Citytv and Citytv+ will be hosted by Diana Swain, former senior investigative reporter for CBC News and host of The Investigators on CBC News in Canada.

He left Canada's public broadcaster in 2024 after 33 years with the CBC, where Morrison partially perfected his iconic voice. After starting out in Canadian radio in the 1960s, Morrison joined CTV in 1973 as a reporter, producer and eventually news anchor.

In the early 1980s, Morrison became a co-anchor of the CBC news and current affairs program The Journal. He joined NBC in January 1986 as anchor of the 5 p.m. and the 11 p.m. news on KNBC-TV in Los Angeles.

Dateline Canada will premiere a two-hour special revisiting the wrongful conviction of Robert Baltwich, who was jailed for murdering his then-girlfriend Elizabeth Bean after she disappeared in 1990.

By reviewing police files on the case, Dateline Canada's team claims to have discovered what went unreported. The true-crime special features Baltovich, a retired Toronto police officer who worked on the case, and the experts who launched the CitiTV series about Canadian crime thrillers and their victims and suspects.
