Six Flags closes 9 coasters after rider dies in gruesome fall

More coasters are temporarily shutting down as an "out of caution" following a Goliath ride crash in Georgia.

More tragedy and ride closures at Six Flags.

The theme park chain is temporarily closing nine other roller coasters at six parks following the death of a rider who reportedly fell from a ride at Six Flags over Georgia on Monday.

While details of the death have not been officially confirmed, local media reports say a rider fell or was thrown from the 200-foot 70 mph Goliath.

Witnesses described a "terrifying scene" to NBC affiliate 11Alive in Atlanta, saying the rider hit the beach several times when he fell. One rider said the falling man was even captured in their autographed souvenir photo for sale in the ride's gift shop. "He was in our pictures," the witness said. He fell three times and was hit by a car. According to the police, several other passengers were also injured. The two riders said workers checked their safety harnesses before starting the ride, as per protocol.

The video below shows the riders being escorted from the Goliath after the incident.

Nine additional rides similar to the park's Georgia version of Goliath have been temporarily closed, including Goliath at Magic Mountain in Valencia, California, Nitro at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey, and Orion and Diamondback at Kings Island in Ohio.

The news follows Six Flags Magic Mountain permanently shutting down its popular X2 ride last month after two riders suffered brain hemorrhages and many other riders claimed other injuries. Three people are suing Six Flags and the coaster manufacturer over the ride.
