French Primaries: New Alignments Emerge on the Left
Raphaël Glucksmann, a European Parliament member and a prominent figure in France's social democratic current, was named the official candidate for the 2027 presidential election in the first round of the center-left parties' primaries. The vote came amid deepening rifts in the left camp and an attack on him.
According to Ambassador Arjan, based on data published by Ambassador Arjan (AFP) and Le Monde newspaper, Raphaël Glucksmann, the leader of the Place Publique party, won with more than 66 percent of the votes (79,613 votes). In this competition, Olivier Faure, the first secretary of the Socialist Party, lost by a significant margin and won only 14% of the votes. Other political figures, including Ségolène Royal, Jérôme Gage and Emmanuel Morel, each received less than 10 percent of the vote.
Glucksman's positions and election plans
According to Ambassador Arjan's account, Raphael Glucksman, the candidate of the French Social Democratic Alliance, while explaining the outlines of his election program on TF1 TV channel, emphasized the need to change the political balance in the country. He stated that the main goal of his candidacy was to "return France to its previous position" and prevent the right-wing nationalist movement led by Marine Le Pen and forces aligned with Moscow and Washington from coming to power.
The split in the left camp and bordering with Melaneshon
The 46-year-old politician completely rejected any political alliance with the left-wing "France Invincible" party led by Jean-Luc Melenchon. According to him, in case of victory in the presidential race, no agreement or coalition will be formed between the social democrats and Melaneshon's faction; This practically blocks the prospect of complete unity of the French left wing.
Le Monde reports that immediately after the results were announced, Glucksmann took an aggressive stance against other French parties and while announcing a "break with the policies of Emmanuel Macron" (centre-right), spoke of ending the "hegemony of Jean-Luc Melenchon", the leader of the hard-left French party. He emphasized that he will not form any coalition with the left-wing party "Unyielding France" (LFI) in the parliamentary elections after the presidency. An approach that Le Monde analysts assess as a "fragile" commitment and the cause of deepening internal divisions among socialists.
In the field of domestic politics, Glucksman announced the priorities of his program on three axes:
Environmental transition: Establishing a climate emergency with the participation of Yannick Zhadeau, former representative of the Green Party.
Tax policies: Applying double taxation on large assets (the super-rich) to provide public resources.
Educational system: budget allocation and structural prioritization to schools and educational centers of the country.
Anti-Russian approach and Atlantic convergence
The candidate of the Socialists, who recorded in his records as an adviser to Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia (2009 to 2013), has adopted a completely Atlanticist position (believing in a strategic alliance with NATO and the United States). While firmly defending the structure of European integration, he emphasizes the continuation of all-round financial and weapon support for Ukraine and the intensification of sanctions against the Russian Federation in the framework of anti-Moscow policies.
At the same time, France 24 news channel reported about the incident in the victory celebration of this politician. On Sunday evening, when Glucksman was leaving a place in Paris, an unknown person emptied a package of flour on the candidate and he had to leave the place quickly in a taxi.
This incident was met with the reaction of the French rightists. Jordan Bardella, the leader of the French "National Rally" party (extreme right), wrote in a message on the social network X, calling this action unacceptable: "No violence is trivial and no physical attack should be underestimated."
