Following reports that the Snapdragon 8 Elite 6th Generation Extreme Edition processor in test samples of the Galaxy S27 Ultra had a severe overheating problem, Qualcomm has denied these claims.
Qualcomm has emphasized that there is no thermal expansion problem in this processor; However, there is still the question of whether mobile chips with high operating frequencies can stay cool during long and heavy processing without performance degradation.
The story began when a Korean media outlet claimed that prototypes of the Galaxy S27 Ultra were overheating during internal testing. According to this report, Qualcomm's Extreme Edition chip with a higher operating frequency has experienced a severe performance drop due to thermal limitations when running long stress tests. It is said that this issue forced Samsung to set a deadline of mid-October to fix the problems; If the problems are not resolved, Samsung may go for Exynos 2700.
It is also said that the Exynos 2700 beat the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme 6th generation in internal benchmarks and recorded about 10% better performance in the Geekbench multi-core test.
Losing the exclusive supply of Ultra series chips will be a big change for Samsung; A company that usually relies on Qualcomm's flagship chips in global markets. With mass production slated for later this year, a last-minute processor supplier switch could pose major logistical problems for Samsung's flagship launch schedule.
Don McGuire, Qualcomm's chief marketing officer, was quick to respond to the reports on social media, calling the rumors "100 percent false." He assured users that initial tuning and optimization of the platform is standard procedure before product launch. Of course, this Qualcomm executive specifically mentioned the standard version of Snapdragon 8 Elite Generation 6 in his statement and refused to directly address the Extreme Edition version with a higher working frequency, which was mentioned in the initial report. The Extreme Edition uses a slightly more powerful GPU and faster memory support.
