Zohran Mamdani, New York City's mayor, says he will not dismiss NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch despite pressure from socialists.
Zohran Mamdani backed NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch, even though Democratic Socialists of America called for her removal over the Bronx shooting.
Despite pressure from the left, Mamdani says he has "no plans" to fire NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch.
New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani has defended her decision to retain New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch despite calls from Democratic Socialists of America to fire her after the Bronx shooting.
New York City Mayor Zahran Mamdani said Tuesday that she has "no plans" to fire New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch as she defies calls from her Democratic Socialist allies to remove the city's top cop in the wake of protests over the Bronx ICE shooting.
Mamdani was asked about Tisch's future as the department's chief ahead of a ceremony honoring fallen NYPD officers on Tuesday.
"Jessica Tisch is the police commissioner. I have no plans to change that," Mamdani told reporters.
"The reason I chose Jessica Tisch as police commissioner was her track record of rooting out corruption from the top ranks of the NYPD and reducing crime in our city," he continued. And over the last 10 months that we've been working together, we've had the lowest number of homicides in the history of our city, the lowest number of shootings and the lowest number of shooting victims."

The mayor's comments came after the New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) called for Tisch's ouster after last week's ICE shooting and urged Mamdani to use his powers to kick ICE out of New York City.
The request comes after last week's shooting of Oscar Belgall during a federal immigration operation in the Bronx.
Belgal, a 28-year-old Dominican national, was shot after he allegedly refused officers' orders during an ICE targeted operation to arrest him, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

After this incident, the spokesperson of the municipality said that Mamdani is investigating the circumstances related to the shooting, but has no plans to remove the Tish.
Scott Monroe, president of the Dedicated Detectives Association — the union that represents active and retired NYPD detectives — was also asked by reporters Tuesday about the DSA's request for Mamdani to fire Tisch.
Monroe said he believes Mamdani supports the police commissioner, noting that crime is down and Tish is "doing his job."
Mamdani and Tish appeared together Tuesday at the New York City Police Department Memorial, where they honored 42 fallen members of the NYPD, including 41 who died of illnesses related to the 9/11 terrorist attacks and their aftermath. The ceremony also honored Detective 1st Class Didar al-Islam, who was killed in a mass shooting in Midtown Manhattan in 2025.
The death toll from 9/11 continues to rise decades later, as toxic exposure haunts survivors.
In this ceremony, the mayor paid his respects to the martyrs and their families, a ceremony in which Tish also participated.
"While we cannot feel the silence they left behind, we refuse to let their memory fade," Mamdani said.
Earlier this week, Mamdani ordered the NYPD to conduct a comprehensive review of its use-of-force policies and practices.
He also announced reforms aimed at strengthening accountability when police officers are accused of serious misconduct.
