Marvel's new film, Spider-Man: A Whole New Age, grossed more than $2.5 billion on a budget of $225 million, becoming the highest-grossing film in US domestic box office history and the third highest-grossing film of all time. A work that gained immense popularity from the audience and is considered one of the most successful comic book films in the history of cinema.
Last week, I wrote a review of the "Wonderman" series, where I discussed in detail the recent state of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and superhero cinema. If I want to mention very briefly; We all know that Marvel Studios could not repeat its stunning success after Avengers: Endgame. In that article, I listed two main reasons that caused the decline of Marvel and superhero cinema in general in recent years. One was the excessive greed of investors to make products one after another using boring repetitive formulas, which closed the way for creativity and innovation in this cinema, and the other was the corona virus pandemic, which was like a match on the gunpowder of superhero cinema. In these years, a studio like Marvel was able to pull its rug out of the water despite its successive failures, and on the other hand, the DC Cinematic Universe (DCEU) could not and completely disappeared from the scene. Below I have prepared a table that shows the budget and sales of each film at the global box office along with the IMDb score of each work. Take a look at the table below to see how the superhero movie that once drew the biggest audiences to the theaters and had incredible and guaranteed sales has fared in recent years.
It is important to know that any of the above films need to sell more than 3 times the estimated budget to become profitable and a commercial success. The above table is worth checking in order to understand how many works have been in recent years that not only did not make a profit, but also turned into big commercial failures. Since Marvel Studio is considered the strongest superhero movie studio of the new millennium, due to its high branding power, it was able to survive despite several significant failures in recent years, and in the meantime, it had successful works such as "Spider-Man: No Way Home" as the only movie with sales of more than 1 billion dollars, which played an effective role. But these commercial failures crushed the backs of many studios and programs of many years, which can be mentioned as the dissolution of the Sony Cinematic Universe (SSU) and the DC Cinematic Universe (DCEU), which among its aftershocks was the sale of one of the biggest super companies in the history of cinema, "Warner Brothers", which is more than a century old!
I presented these explanations in order to remember what time frame we are in. Now it is not 2018 and 2019 when a superhero movie, just by the Marvel or DC brand, succeeds in making significant sales and making a significant profit. Now it is the year 2026 of the post-corona period. The period when superhero cinema has only had two movies with sales of more than 1 billion in the last 6 years, which was a part of the success of both movies, namely Spider-Man: No Way Home and Deadpool & Wolverine, due to the multitude of characters and the use of nostalgic characters such as Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Wolverine Hugh Jackman, etc.
Therefore, the commercial success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day is not just a result of a successful marketing, nor is it a result of the sales fever of superhero movies, but it is due to the release of a high-quality work with high standards that we have been deprived of in recent years.
In the continuation of this article, I will review this film part by part and despite stating its weaknesses, I will argue why this quality work deserved such a success.
The movie "A brand new Spider-Man" opens with a wonderful interview. After showing the memorable logo of "Sony" and "Columbia Pictures", which have been tied to Spider-Man movies since Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy, we see Marvel's interview with a sad music. In this thirty-second interview, the events of the movie "Spider-Man: No Way Home" are reviewed in a very compact manner.
Tom Holland's Spider-Man was considered the youngest Spider-Man in the history of cinema when he first appeared on the screen in the movie "Captain America: Civil War". Tom Holland played the role of this 14-15-year-old boy, while he himself was only 19-20 years old. For comparison, Tobey Maguire appeared at the age of 26 and Andrew Garfield at the age of 29. In a bold and smart move, Marvel decided to portray the youthful and playful side of Peter Parker's character in the early years; A side of Peter Parker that we haven't seen in previous movies and ironically, it's also very comical. The result was funny and teenage movies including "Homecoming" and "Far from Home" which had a distinct atmosphere. Although these films were well-received by audiences and critics and grossed a very successful $1.9 billion in total, they did not go down well with some die-hard Spider-Man fans. But the Marvel studio showed that it took the right path and Peter Parker slowly turned into a full and responsible boy. The peak of this character growth - with a proper and spectacular payment - was formed in the movie "Spider-Man: No Way Home". Where Peter, who initially expressed his personal desires, led to problems in Dr. Strange's spell, followed by multiverse adventures, finally took responsibility for all the events that happened and, like a true hero, offered Dr. Strange to perform a new spell. A spell that made everyone completely forget about Peter Parker as if he never existed.
The opening credits of the film also refer to the same issue by showing the dialogues exchanged between Peter and Doctor Strange at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. If you pay attention to the opening credits, you'll notice that when the flashback scenes from the previous Spider-Man MCU movies are shown, Peter Parker is slowly removed from each person present (MJ, Ned Leeds, and Aunt May) as if he wasn't there at all! And this is the result of the same hard and selfless decision that Peter made at the end of the previous movie and it was shown with the most charm at the beginning of the movie.
Then the movie starts with Peter's monologue like Sam Raimi's Spider-Man trilogy. He is reading the letter he wrote to MJ earlier at the end of Spider-Man: No Way Home to remember him, but ultimately refused to deliver it to MJ. A letter that becomes one of the key elements of the film. One of the most key sentences mentioned by Peter in this letter becomes one of the themes of the movie; Where he says, “I'm not just Peter Parker, and I'm Spider-Man. Sometimes Spider-Man has to do the hard work, even if it breaks Peter Parker's heart. And maybe this is my responsibility; To live only with the truth."
Then, in the opening minutes, we see Peter Parker's life during 4 years with a quick edit. We see that he is busy all the time with his heroic work to save New York City. He communicates with a female detective named DeWolf and cooperates fully with the New York City Police to rid the city of mafias and criminals. In these few minutes, we briefly and intensively witness the fight of Spider-Man with the famous comic book characters, including Scorpion, Tombstone, the Hand group, etc., and handing them over to the police. While Spider-Man is doing his best, Peter Parker is hibernating. Every day, he watches the condition of his old friends from afar through Ned's live and Instagram stories. What Ned and MJ are doing at MIT. He constantly buys flowers and goes to his aunt's grave. And in the meantime, he is alone and his only companion is the artificial intelligence that helps him in doing his heroic deeds. until one day his feet open to a different story; The story of a person with telepathic powers who has the ability to enter the minds of various people, and now he and the police must find this unknown person with supernatural powers and find out what he is up to.
"Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" uses a detective-mystery narrative in which the audience follows new clues along with Spider-Man.
"Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" uses a detective-mystery narrative to advance its story, a narrative that was first used in Mark Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" films and we had previously seen it faintly in "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and significantly in "Spider-Man: Far From Home". In the first film (Homecoming), Peter is in search of a criminal gang that steals from "Damage Control Organization" and "Stark Industries" and ends up with Adrien Tomes (Michael Keaton's well-played Vulture). In the movie Far From Home, it is not clear until the first hour where the four elements come from and what purpose they are pursuing to destroy various European cities, and even the real intention of the character of Quentin Beck (Mysterio with a good acting by Jake Gyllenhaal) has not been revealed to the audience, until finally with that fascinating plot twist, the audience realizes the whole story.
But "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is ahead of both mentioned films in its kind of enigmatic narrative; Because in this movie, the audience gets new clues step by step with Spider-Man, and in fact, every action that Peter takes makes the audience think about the identity of the villain of the story with new data. This is while in the first movie we were familiar with Vulture and his gang from the beginning and we knew everything and Peter was slowly getting the information that was given to us from the beginning of the movie. Or even in the second movie, although many facts have not been revealed in the first hour, but in the private sequence of Quentin Beck, everything is revealed to the audience at once, and the audience is still one step ahead of Spider-Man. But in "A Whole New Age" the audience goes step by step with Spider-Man. Neither the audience nor Peter knows anything more. Detective DeWolf blames Scorpion for these events, but both Peter and we know that there is a force beyond these words. Peter goes to Black Widow (played by Florence Pugh) for help, and she gives him information about V-MAX and the DODC (Damage Control) organization, which leads Peter to a meeting with the head of the organization (Bill Metzger). For some time, these events are overshadowed by Peter's inner changes and his emotional relationships, until the antagonist of the story finds out the identity of Spider-Man, Peter Parker, and tests him with his lover (MJ), which eventually leads to the revelation of his own identity with the help of artificial intelligence (AI).
The film "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is considered one of the most serious and deep films of the MCU. Peter is no longer a playful teenager but a responsible and lonely hero.
As the title suggests, "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" has a different time and mood than the previous MCU Spider-Man trilogy. Changing the director of the film from John Watts to Destin Daniel Kerton was not just a publicity move to deceive people and its effect can be seen everywhere in the film. John Watts' Spider-Man films were teenage and fun works, which, as I said at the beginning of the text, was a smart and distinctive decision. Works with a high beat that put the audience in the middle of a barrage of jokes and really funny situations in Peter's life. Of course, this comedy in combination with drama and melodrama became a new formula for Spider-Man films, which was followed in each of the films of this trilogy with a different balance; For example, the movie Homecoming had the most comedy scenes among the trilogy, and the movie No Way Home had the most tragic scenes. But everything changed from Dr. Strange's spell. The Peter Parker we see in this movie is 4 years older than the Peter of the previous movie and 7 years older than the Peter Parker we first saw in the movie "Captain America: Civil War". Aunt May is no longer a guide but a grave for him, his friends and acquaintances have completely forgotten him, and there is no longer Tony Stark and Happy Hogan to help him on his way to being a hero. Peter "Whole New Age" as the title promises, really experiences a new age, the age of loneliness. A time when he decided to suppress Peter's feelings and emotions and go alone with Spiderman to fight the mafia and criminals. This personal growth and loneliness is not only reflected in the film script but also in the form of the film. "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is undoubtedly one of the most serious and darkest films in the entire MCU. Although comedy, as one of the main pillars of Spider-Man movies, is done here in an attractive and funny way, it is at its lowest level compared to other works of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The theme of the film also follows a deeper concept that indicates an adult hero, not a playful teenager whose head smells like black and green! And this, in my opinion, is one of the biggest trump cards of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which promises a deeper and more serious Spider-Man trilogy.
Romance is another key and fundamental component of Spider-Man's works, which dates back to 1963 in the world of comics. "Love" has been one of the keywords of this superhero since the beginning of writing and designing Spiderman comic books. The situation is the same in the world of cinema. From the very detailed, realistic and different romance between Peter and Mary Jane in Sam Raimi's trilogy to the tragic romance between Peter and Gwen in The Amazing Spider-Man film series, Spiderman movies have always included one of the richest and most memorable romances in cinema.
MCU Spider-Man movies also showed this romance with a different approach. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, 15-year-old Peter falls in love with Liz Allen, a smart high school senior. A teenage love that remains at the level of a high school prank and is quickly forgotten. He gradually meets Michelle Jones (Zendaya) and falls in love with her. A love that becomes one of the most fascinating strengths of the Spider-Man MCU trilogy. There is a very good chemistry between Tom Holland's Peter and Zendaya's MJ, which is one of the main reasons for Michelle Jones' characterization. A very intelligent and charismatic girl who is active. From the secondary appearance in the movie "Homecoming", Michelle Jones is considered not an object but an active subject. The peak of this activism is in the movie "Far From Home" when he himself realized the identity of Spider-Man and even revealed Mysterio's deception.
In this regard, in addition to the excellent acting of Tom Holland in the role of Peter Parker and Spider-Man - who has always been able to portray every feeling from crying to laughing, from victory to defeat in the best way - Zendaya has also been an accurate choice for the role of the charismatic Michelle Jones. Zendaya has added features to this character with her powerful acting that has made it attractive and intriguing. نکتۀ قوت دیگر این کاراکتر رشد شخصیتیای است که در این سالها داشته است. Like Peter Parker, Michelle Jones grows up in the movie, she moves away from the teenage atmosphere and now in "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" she has become a mature and complete girl.
One of the biggest strengths of the movie "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is its well-thought-out screenplay, which I mentioned several positive points throughout the text. Calculated characterization and away from the edges is another strength of this script. From the first time he sees Peter, Zendaya and Ned in person at the party, it is clear that these two people are different from their 4 years ago (No Way Home). Both of them studied at MIT University for 4 years and found new friends and acquaintances, and naturally, in this new environment, their personalities have also changed. (especially MG)
But one of the most daring decisions of the film is made in relation to the love between Peter and MJ. Spider-Man: No Way Home, with all its strengths and weaknesses, had a unique ending. پایانی که در آن پیتر تنهای تنهاست و هیچکس دیگر او را به یاد نخواهد آورد. At first, he tries to fulfill his promise to MJ and writes an emotional letter to give to his lover, but in the memorable cafe scene, in order not to involve her in the dangers of his superhero life, he decides to never introduce himself to her and live alone. شروع فیلم «مردعنکبوتی: روزگاری کاملا جدید» هم دقیقا در همین راستاست. Peter is busy with his Spiderman-centric life day and night, and Peter's only pleasure is to log into Instagram and watch the Lives, posts and stories of his past close friends. Of course, somewhere, he finally decides to enter Ned and MJ's party, but to be able to see them closely and get to know them a little, so that after 4 years, he can get out of loneliness a little bit. (I must say that choosing the song loser by Impala team was also a smart choice, which has become very viral these days.) But Peter sees MJ in the arms of another boy and leaves the party in a bad mood. He then begins to soar in the sky of New York City with great bitterness, and then the internal changes of his body begin, which leads to his temporary unconsciousness. The movie "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" has many similarities to the masterpiece of cinema, "Spider-Man 2", one of which is this case. The idea of internal changes arising from environmental stimuli was one of the original ideas of Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man 2", which is also present in this film with a slight change. But the torment of his irresponsible conscience towards the people and turning his back on the power that has been given to him makes him decide to be both Spider-Man and Peter Parker, and this is where the key phrase "with great power comes great responsibility" takes center stage. Here, there is a similar theme, which of course is not considered a copy in any way, because it is executed with a completely different finish and atmosphere specific to the atmosphere of this film. Here Peter, in contrast to Spider-Man 2, decides to be a lone Spider-Man due to the events of No Way Home, but learns throughout the story that he should not lose sight of his individual identity as Peter Parker. Being Spiderman doesn't conflict with Peter Parker and he can balance them. The pivotal point of this decision happens in the confrontation between Spider-Man and the Hand group, who are under the mental control of Jane Gray; Where Peter replies, "Both!"
یکی دیگر از جذابیتهای فیلمنامه رشد شخصیتی پیتر در طول همین فیلم است. Peter, who in the previous films always needed a guide or mentor such as Tony Stark, Aunt May, Spiderman Toby and Andrew, this time he becomes a guide for others (Jane Grey) and guides him.
Dustin Daniel Kerton, who had previously shown his abilities in making comic book works by making the successful film and series "Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and "Wonderman", will cope well with this heavy project.
دستین دنیل کرتون حقیقتا کارگردانی خوب و متفاوتی را در این فیلم اتخاذ کرده است. This director, who previously entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe with the film "Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings" and recently directed the first two episodes of the successful "Wonderman" series, successfully learned his lesson in this film and reserved his seat for the next Spider-Man films. In order to examine his direction more closely, I will mention two of the sequences between Peter and MJ. اولی سکانس مهمانیست که پیتر، ام جی را در حال معاشقه با فردی دیگر میبیند. کارگردانی کرتون در این صحنه بسیار حسابشده و دقیق است. The dark atmosphere of the house and Tom Holland's very good act are then cut to his dark scenes in the dark and rainy sky of New York, which creates a sad atmosphere. On the other hand, the flashbacks are matched in the most accurate way possible with Michael Giacchino's always brilliant soundtrack, so that the result becomes one of the most bitter and sad sequences in the history of Spider-Man films.
The second one is the scene where Peter, pleased with the arrest of Jane Gray, returns to MJ to bring her back home, but he is confronted with Peter's letter in his hand and he has read it! No matter how brave and admirable the dialogues and overall script of this sequence are, the direction of Destin Daniel Kirton is also powerful. He has decided not to use the soundtrack in this sequence and the dialogues are exchanged in a sad silence. The scene that was one of the most anticipated moments for the audience in these 5 years and everyone was expecting a passionate romance, gives way to a scary silence. The silence that best describes Peter Parker after hearing the sentence "But I'm not in love with you!" از سوی معشوقۀ قدیمیاش توصیف میکند. The sequence where cold water pours on the bodies of all Spider-man lovers and breaks everyone's heart. Next, he goes to Peter Cutt's tartan scenes, which also moves Michelle Jones with him. این یک صحنۀ پاردوکسیکال تماشاییست. Where Peter is hugging MJ and is as close as possible to him, but just a few minutes ago he heard a firm no from him and is at the farthest possible distance from his encouragement. در این سکانس حتی شکل تاراندازیهای مردعنکبوتی هم مملو از غم است. Two sequences that turn into memorable sequences thanks to a brave screenplay along with the direction and powerful acting, and the soundtrack by Giacchino creates the atmosphere in the best way.
As much as the payment of the protagonist (main character) is important in the film and screenplay, the antagonist (negative character) is also of special importance. I mentioned earlier that the film, using a mystery narrative, does not reveal the identity of the villain until the first hour to keep the viewer in a state of confusion. But finally, about an hour into the movie, we get to know Jane Gray's character. In the comic world, Jane Gray is one of the mutant characters of the X-Men team, and she has not appeared in the Spider-Man comics yet! Previously, this character had appeared many times in the world of cinema and the X-Fox 20th century franchise. Therefore, by choosing Jane Gray as the antagonist of the film "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age", Marvel has used a character other than the villains of the Spider-Man world for the first time in the history of Spider-Man films. Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Mardeshni, Venom, Lizard, Electro, Vulture, Shocker and Mysterio were all the villains that have been present in this superhero's films so far, and Jane Gray is considered a law-breaking decision both in terms of gender (female) and in terms of comic book origin. But did this decision ultimately benefit the film or harm it?!
I answer this question with two different approaches. Let me say from the beginning that in my opinion, the choice of Jane Gray as the antagonist of the story is considered a harmful choice for the film, which in some ways will benefit the future of Spider-Man films, which I will explain at the end of the next three paragraphs. Spiderman is considered a human character by nature, and one of the most important reasons that made this character the most popular superhero in the world today is his simplicity and closeness to a normal person. It's true that Peter Parker has the ability to teleport, it's true that he's physically superior, and it's true that he can climb the right wall, but he's still a shy, polite, intelligent boy with the same concerns as any other human, and no magical or metaphysical powers. Like all of us, Peter Parker falls in love, falls in love, makes mistakes, acts like a hero, and is generally a human being. Therefore, each of us expects that the character who faces him in the special movie of this character is also a person from the street, not a supernatural legend from a galaxy far, far away! That's why the villains of Spider-Man were always considered sympathetic characters, because they, like Spider-Man, were ordinary people with some superior earthly qualities. Although Jane Gray is not among the legends and myths like Thor and Loki, she is naturally different from characters like Norman Osborn, Adrien Toms and Dr. Otto Octavius. Each of these characters have new powers due to the use of technology and a different destiny, but Jane Gray, as I said before, is a mutant; A mutant who has the ability of mental telepathy and telepathy. He can enter people's minds from a distance and take control of their bodies and actions. Regardless of the fact that such a supernatural force is far from a film on the street level of Spider-Man, unfortunately this character does not have a very good payoff in the film, and in some ways, the Spider-Man film is a victim of Marvel's future planning for the X-Men.
In a world where Instagram likes and comments become a tool for the success or failure of a movie and even chooses the winner of the Academy Award, it is not surprising that the capitalists of Marvel decided to take advantage of the trending Siddique Sinque to play the role of Jane Gray and fake force to make her character sympathetic! Despite the high popularity of this actor among cyberspace users, he has not yet presented a significant role in the world of cinema, and at least he has no credibility with us cinema fans. Although Sidney Sink does not have a weak role in this film, his acting level is at least a head or two lower than actors such as Mark Ruffalo, Tom Holland and Zendaya. But the main problem of the film is not the choice of Jane Gray as the antagonist, nor the choice of Sidney Sink to sell more at the box office, but the biggest problem of the film is that it tries to replace the victim with the victim.
Perhaps the first time watching the crimes that Jane Gray commits in the film is not visible because in the first hour the viewer is not familiar with the identity of the villain of the story and after his identity is revealed he does not commit a crime and the viewer who is involved in numerous incidents that are taking place does not have the opportunity to go back and review the events and therefore may feel pity by watching the cute face of Sidi Sink and a sentimental flashback and imagine him as a victim. But Sidney Sink's Jane Gray is the one whose first footprint in the film is the destruction of at least 3 or 4 police cars and their occupants by the tank under his control. He is the one who is placed in the body of an old man and leaves him in the middle of the street in front of a high-speed car so that he may die! He is the one who tries to kill Michelle Jones several times. He is the one who repeatedly uses the mind control of innocent people to achieve his wish and his personal revenge against the damage control organization and plays with the pure emotions of a hero like Peter in the worst possible way (in the sequence where MG tricks Peter by controlling his mind).
None of these events necessarily means a weakness. But the approach taken by the film is completely opposite to the mistakes of such a person. The film tries to portray Jane Gray as a victim, a girl whose sister was wrongfully trapped and even killed by the Damage Control Organization just because she had superhuman powers. The film tries to make him a sympathetic character in any way that the viewer should be with him. But the cinema is not such that the viewer involves his emotions with a character who has caused the death of innocent people just a few minutes ago. Really, the weaknesses and illogicality of the script in the field of Jane Gray's character is in conflict with the entire film, because I explained a little earlier that we are on the side of a detailed and well-thought-out script. In the conversation between the writers and the director, it can be understood that Jane Gray was chosen as the antagonist of the story in the 90th minute, and before that such a person was not supposed to be one of the main characters of the story. That in itself explains everything.
If the movie intends to make Jane Gray a victim, then it should not have attributed all that violence and crime to this character. If this character has become a soul after the death of his sister (which, by the way, this sisterly relationship that becomes the main form of Jane Gray is not developed in that superficial flashback at all), what is the final redemption and sacrifice of Peter for?! Although the script finally places Jane Gray next to the subtext of the work in relation to loneliness, such contradictions in this character do not allow empathy and full enjoyment of that scene of emotional dialogue between Aunt May and Jane Gray, even though the dialogues and intentions of the filmmaker are good and defensible.
But let's get to the only positive point I picked up regarding the choice of Jane Gray as the antagonist of this film. The heads of Marvel and Kevin Feige are smart people and wouldn't have thoughtlessly decided to use a person with mental powers in a Spider-Man movie. Since the script of "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" correctly decided as much as possible that Doctor Strange's spell created by "No Way Home" will remain strong and MJ refuses to be with Peter even after realizing this story, I believe that Marvel heads were looking for a way to erase the spell at least from Ned and MJ's minds, and finally they reached Jane Grey. It also helps them advance the MCU's future plans for mutants. Jane Gray is deeply moved when she realizes the extent of Peter's love for MJ. Especially after the conversation he has with Peter in his unconscious mind, he realizes more and more the level of kindness and kind heart of Peter, and when his power controls the minds of half of New York City, he erases the spell of Doctor Strange from the minds of Ned Leeds and MJ, and that is why we see MJ and Ned's tears in such a situation, because in my opinion, the past memories of these two people once again are back This theory fits with the film's ending, where MG chooses this location again, reminiscing about the days when he walked behind the canvas with Peter, clutching the black daffodil necklace that Peter gave him and staring at the horizon. This theory also fits with the re-friendship scene between Peter and Ned, the same scene where Ned seems to fully remember Peter.
The presence of Punisher and Hulk characters, in addition to helping to sell more movies and increasing the appeal of action sequences, is well placed in the fabric of the story and has strengthened the text and subtext of the work.
Taking a closer look at the pre-production stages of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we can see that Kevin Feige and the producers were opening a special account on this film from the very beginning. As you saw in the table at the beginning of the article, at a time when superhero movies were constantly turning into back-breaking commercial failures for their studios, the movie "Spider-Man: No Way Home" was able to become one of the 10 best-selling movies in the history of cinema and once again proved that this spider-hero has a stunning and distinct popularity with other superheroes! In fact, it was Spider-Man: No Way Home that separated the post-Corona people from streaming services like Netflix and reconciled them with movie theaters. It is interesting to know that in 2021, the movie Spider-Man sold 1.9 billion dollars, and in the second place among American films, "James Bond" was present, which had experienced sales of 0.8 billion dollars, that is, less than half of the sales of Spider-Man! Therefore, even before the production of the film, the heads of Marvel had made a plan to make a successful film at the box office, and one of the reasons for the presence of popular characters such as "Hulk" and "Punisher" was for this reason to increase the weight of the upcoming work.
But the important point in the movie "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is that popular characters such as Hulk and Punisher are not just a promotional presence to sell more movies at the global box office, but are completely at the service of the story. In addition to the fact that the presence of Hulk and Punisher has created very attractive action scenes, this presence has helped to fatten the theme of the story even beyond the action. Frank Castle with the nickname Punisher (played by Jon Bernthal) is a different character who was part of the Netflix world in the successful series "Daredevil" and his own series called "Punisher" and had gained significant popularity among the audience. Now he officially entered the MCU world with this movie. The screenplay cleverly does not mention how this character entered the Spider-Man stories, and at the beginning of the movie, we have a scene where the Punisher and Spider-Man have a funny short fight that only mentions the story of Staten Island. In addition to showing the familiarity of Punisher and Spider-Man over the past four years, these references leave the creators' hands open to present more stories in the future. When Peter takes MJ to the Punisher's hideout to protect him, Peter and Frank exchange dialogues about identity and loneliness that are both watchable and relatable. Frank, who is considered a vengeful character, angrily blames Peter for his loneliness and admits that if his family and close people were alive, he would certainly not adopt this lifestyle and live a different life with them.
The presence of the character of Hulk or Bruce Banner (played by the always good Mark Ruffalo) also helps to advance the story in addition to enhancing the action scenes of the film. In one scene, Peter visits Professor Banner's classroom to ask him for advice on his power suppressor so he can invent a chip to suppress his heightened spider aspect. Banner points out to Peter that such a thing is possible, but man does not know exactly which genes are considered good and which genes are bad, and thus he changes nature. A point that Peter doesn't pay much attention to at first, but later he realizes that he shouldn't suppress his superhuman powers with a chip and the like, but he should establish a self-made balance between Peter and Spiderman's identity.
"Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is a first-class blockbuster movie that has the highest standards of special effects and sound, and has attractive and varied action scenes.
One of the main elements of superhero cinema and Spiderman movies is the quality of special effects and the level of its fight and so-called action scenes. In the end, there is a place to address this important issue. Basically, the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have a high standard in special effects and action, and it is rare to see a work from this studio that has weak special effects. Spiderman movies have always had the best possible special effects throughout the history of cinema. From Sam Raimi's successful trilogy and "Spider-Man 2", which won the Oscar for best special effects, to Mark Webb's "The Amazing Spider-Man" and Marvel's Spider-Man, they have always held the highest possible standards. Fortunately, the movie "Spider-Man: A Whole New Age" is not an exception to this rule, and there are very attractive and varied fight scenes throughout the movie. The film is full of scenes of Spider-Man's fight with various characters from the comic world, from the two fights with Scorpion to the fight with the Punisher, the Hulk, the Hand Group and even the agents of the Damage Control Organization. In addition, the scenes of Spider-Man swinging in the city are very well done. In Tom Holland's previous Spider-Man movies, his way of webbing was very natural and attractive, and here he has maintained the same quality and maybe even improved it.
The film also has the highest standards in terms of sound. Michael Giacchino is responsible for the soundtrack of the Spider-Man movie for the fourth time in a row, and as always, he has come out absolutely proud. The voice acting of the film is also done very correctly and professionally, especially in the fight scenes, and adds to the pleasure of watching these attractive scenes.
Spider-Man: A Whole New Age, as the title promises, is a completely new and different work from the lonely and introverted Peter Parker. A person who has completely forgotten the identity of Peter and has completely chosen the identity of Spiderman for himself. A first-rate blockbuster that is full of games, soundtrack, action and emotional scenes, special effects and dialogues at the highest level, which is definitely recommended to watch. Although the film falls out of rhythm in a few moments and limps in the payment of its antagonist, it has a powerful and calculated script that, along with the positive points mentioned, is among the best comic book movies in cinema.
