Updated with the latest: Improving wind conditions helped firefighters make progress Friday on the Bryson Fire in north Malibu, with the fire now 39% contained, according to the latest reports.

The fire has burned about 147 acres, according to a report this afternoon by the Los Angeles County Fire Department, which had jurisdiction over the fire since the initial response at about 4:40 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of Mulholland Highway and Encinal Canyon Road.

A total of 414 personnel and two helicopters are battling the blaze north of Encinal between the former Malibu Golf Club and Saddlerock Ranch, according to Cal Fire. Television reports Thursday night indicated that the fire started next to the Camp Kilpatrick juvenile detention center.

Two areas in the area are under mandatory evacuations, though none in the city of Malibu. Evacuation warnings remain in place west of Malibu. Road closures include Decker Road and Encinal Canyon Road, Canaan Road and Mulholland Highway, and Mulholland Boulevard and Westlake. PCH remains open.

The National Weather Service has red flag warnings in effect for much of Los Angeles and southeast Ventura until 8 p.m. Saturday, with local mountain gusts of 50 to 70 mph reported Friday. The NWS expects the Santa Ana wind event, which combined with high temperatures and low humidity to create hazardous conditions, will subside this evening.

The NWS said today that it expects winds to be 10 to 15 mph weaker on Saturday.

Earlier, Friday, 12:30 a.m.: A wildfire in west Malibu ignited Thursday and spread from one to five acres in 15 minutes. Within an hour, the incident was estimated at 35 acres, including various spot fires that were pushed forward by wind pressure.

As of 11:30 p.m., the fire was estimated to be over 146 acres with 5 percent containment and moving SSW. The National Weather Service predicts that winds will "increase significantly overnight, with gusts of 50 to 60 mph."

The fire, called the Bryson Fire, was first reported shortly before 5 p.m. Near the intersection of Mulholland Highway and Encinal Canyon Road. The flash point appears to be just north of Encinal between the former Malibu Golf Club and Saddlerock Ranch. Specifically, TV reports indicated that the fire started right next to the Camp Kilpatrick juvenile detention center.

According to the Watch Duty app, evacuation orders were issued for the south of the fire in the Zuma and Trancas valleys, where the wind is driving the fire. It later spread to the west of the area where the event started.

The Los Angeles County Probation Department says it has safely evacuated 38 youths from Camp Kilpatrick.

Evacuation warnings were issued from the Los Angeles County line north and south toward Point II. An evacuation order means "leave now," while an evacuation warning means "be prepared to leave." See Order in red and Alert in orange below (as of 7:30pm).

Road closures in the area include Decker Road, Encinal Canyon Road, Kanan Road, Mulholland Highway and Westlake Boulevard.

Fire officials were most concerned about keeping the fire north of Encinal Canyon Road, one of the few natural fires in the area. The concern is that if it jumps Encinal Canyon Road, the flames could be pushed straight up the coast into Zuma, Tranca and other canyons. By 10:30 p.m., the perimeter of the fire had extended on its southwest flank just toward Encinal. See the map of the environment below.

After starting in Chatsworth and burning through parts of Calabasas and Agoura Hills, the much larger Woolsey Fire in 2018, when, according to the Malibu Times, "several valleys burned simultaneously, first driven by 60 mph Santa Ana winds, and then fanned by all the wind's heat."

Santa Ana winds of 19 mph with gusts as high as 36 by early evening were fanning the fire from the northeast, according to the National Weather Service report for the Malibu Hills. At 19:30, the air temperature was 80 degrees with a relative humidity of 14%.

The area is densely populated and has private properties that are located on top of hills or in valleys, making firefighting access difficult. Among the properties in this area, we can mention Saddlerock Farm, a location used in the filming of The Kardashians, The Bachelor, The Bachelorette, The Biggest Loser, Better Things, Knight Rider and The A-Team. It is also near the historic Calamigos Ranch, home to Grey's Anatomy, Love Is Blind, Bachelorette, The Bachelor, Beverly Hills 90210, Rizzoli & Isles, The Biggest Loser and Wayne's World 2.

The last major fire to hit the region was the Woolsey Fire in 2018, meaning brush in most of those valleys hasn't been cleared in about eight years.

Water-launching helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft were sent to the scene of the accident. A first call response was also requested from Ventura County FD.

By nightfall, many area residents were without power due to planned outages by Southern California Edison in hopes of preventing fires from downed power lines. See the hash marked areas on the map below for those outages.

The good news is that the winds are expected to die down after dark. The bad news is that if the fire continues, the worst wind event in Santa Ana is still expected Friday morning.
