Comcast committed $7.5 million to help finance President Donald Trump's new 90,000-square-foot gold-plated ballroom and event space, and was among 57 companies donating to the project.
The total donations to the new ballroom, which is under construction in the East Wing of the White House, has reached $330 million, according to a Washington Post report published Thursday. Comcast and other companies have previously been identified as ballroom contributors, but specific dollar figures for those amounts have not previously been disclosed. According to the report, Microsoft contributed $10 million, while Amazon, T-Mobile and Mark Zuckerberg's Meta each donated $5 million.
In addition, Alphabet, the parent company of Google and YouTube, agreed to pay Trump $22 million as part of a settlement of the president's complaint of "censorship" over YouTube's suspension over his role in the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. According to court documents, Trump spent $22 million on the construction of the new White House ballroom.
According to the Washington Post, at least $77 million has been contributed to the ballroom by anonymous donors.
Comcast confirmed that it donated money last year to the Trust for the National Mall, a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization dedicated to "restoring, preserving and enriching the National Mall and the White House grounds." Comcast also said it supported elected officials, presidential inaugurations and presidential libraries, including the Obama Foundation and the Reagan and JFK libraries, on a bipartisan basis. The cable and media giant is targeting mid-2027 for the NBCUniversal spinoff.
As of this week, construction continued on the White House Ballroom. After the project faced legal challenges, on August 31, the US Supreme Court in a 5-4 ruling allowed construction to continue on the demolished East Wing site.
The Trump White House has said the ballroom will be "a much-needed and exquisite addition to the approximately 90,000 square feet of ornate and carefully designed total space, seating 650, a significant increase from the 200 in the East Room of the White House."
