Somalis in Minnesota Anger Trump After Federal Agents Raid Ilhan Omar's DC Home

Members of Minneapolis' Somali community say they feel personally targeted after federal agents raided the Washington, D.C. home of Representative Ilhan Omar in a citizenship investigation.

Minneapolis City Council member accused President Trump of breaking the law after Ilhan Omar's attack

"Somalis — we all feel under attack by President Trump," said Jamal Osman, a Somali-born deputy on the Minneapolis City Council, about the impact of the raid by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agents.

Osman continued, referring to the search of Omar's home: "Our president has broken the law many times. ICE [is] terrorizing our community ... and we are not surprised that this has been done."

We have seen the threats and horrible language he uses against my community. Osman said: This is unacceptable and we hope that this will stop.

Abdi, a 37-year-old Minneapolis social worker who declined to give her last name or be interviewed on camera, had harsher words for the president. Like Usman, he said that he was born in Somalia.

"I feel like attacking a congressman — I feel like Donald Trump and his regime wanted to use their power to dehumanize and also humiliate someone who is part of Congress," Abdi said.

He claimed that Trump "hates the people of Somalia because of Ilhan Omar".

Abdi said Trump created "hate" and "fight" with Somalis in America, claiming that they are being chased and harassed in the streets because of the president.

"And Ilhan Omar -- he doesn't treat him as a member of Congress -- he treats him as someone below him," Stow said.

If they take away his citizenship, I will say: Are we in a dictatorship? "It's the use of force to use against an American citizen, so maybe the thinking we have for the United States is completely different."

Usman said the attack is proof of what the Trump administration is willing to do.

We live in the United States, a land of rules. "I don't expect Trump, or anyone for that matter, to violate the United States Constitution." "There are rules," he continued. He can of course threaten, but there is a court process, there is a legal process. "He cannot say that he is deporting him, he is deporting me, thousands of Somalis."

Omar Raid's rage goes from bad to worse when the internet catches on to his past six-word claim: "I couldn't agree more."

Osman's message to the president was simple: "Stop."

"We are like other American citizens," he said.

"I thought it would happen soon," he said. "They have talked about him in a negative way. The government has constantly questioned his immigration and citizenship status in the country. So they should investigate him soon."

Trump responded: "I personally thought he was a total curmudgeon, but that has nothing to do with me. "I think he's a horrible person. Just one of his complaints comes from a foreign country, and then he comes here and complains about our constitution."

"I think he's a terrible person, but that's really up to the Justice Department. I have nothing to do with it."

The Wall Street Journal reported Wednesday that Omar's phone, passport and computers were seized in the raid — it is not clear which other items or materials were taken from her residence, if any.

Omar has not been seen since the raid, but took to social media Monday afternoon to give his reaction to the unfolding investigation.

"This attack by Trump's DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the arming of federal law enforcement to target political enemies. He said that for a decade, Donald Trump has relentlessly targeted Congresswoman Ilhan Omar with inflammatory rhetoric, repeatedly putting a target on her back.

"Now, these attacks have become a senseless federal attack. Mrs. Congress has done nothing wrong. "No president should be able to use the power of the federal government to intimidate his political enemies."
