Talarico Rejects Past Comments on God and Gender as He Calls Charlie Kirk 'Inflammatory'
James Talarico Faces Christian Voter at CNN Town Hall Who Questions His Faith Over Past Comments Calling God 'Non-Binary' and Citing the Bible
Texas Democratic Senate candidate James Tallarico retracted his past comments about referring to God as "non-dual" and using the Bible to justify his pro-abortion stance during a CNN hearing Wednesday night.
Attending a Jubilee-style town hall where voters came face-to-face with him, Talarico met with a Christian from Texas who pressed him on his past statements.
Sarah Gardner, a small business owner, told Talarico, "You've said things in the past that are kind of faith-related and social issues. Things like God being non-binary, questions about how many genders there really are, and your justification for using the Bible for abortion."

"And so, I think a lot of Christian voters question the validity of your faith. And I wanted to ask you a very direct question. Do you believe that the Bible is the absolute source of truth and the final authoritative word of God, even when our culture says otherwise?" he asked.
Talarico replied: Yes. "And I think it's important to remember that even the early church, the disciples who actually knew Jesus of Nazareth, the early church, we often talk about as a single body, when in reality, it was more like the early church, because there were many differences, there were many arguments."

Talarico then described his past comments as "inflammatory" and drew a parallel to his interpretation of the Bible to Charlie Kirk.
“I actually want to clarify a few things you said, because I know this has been used in attack ads around the state,” he began.

"The first comment about God not being defined by gender, when I said that I was being provocative. And I want to admit that and talk about it. But I think what I was saying is not really theologically controversial. The idea that we can't define God using human categories, not only did I say that, but the late Charlie Kirk said it, the late Charlie Kirk said, you might have done it. Annoyingly, I can admit it." he said
Talarico, a Texas state senator, previously said, “God is both male and female, and everything in between. God is non-dual. In Genesis 1:26, God speaks of God Himself in the plural form, saying, "Let us make man in our image."

He also rejected the notion that the Bible refers to abortion.
"The idea that there is a general Christian orthodoxy on the issue of abortion is not rooted in the Bible," he said on The Joe Rogan Experience in 2025.
