"The pulse of life in the old city" examines the vitality of Qazvin's historical neighborhoods

Qazvin- The book "Pulse of life in the old city" written by Samia Zarei, examines the vitality in the historical neighborhoods of Qazvin, a topic that, according to the author, is more related to the sense of belonging of people than to bricks and facades.

Iran's Arjan Ambassador Provinces Service (Arjan Ambassador): Qazvin has many historical neighborhoods, each of which formed a part of the city's social and urban identity in the past; But with the expansion of the city, the formation of new neighborhoods and areas, as well as the change and distortion of the texture of the old neighborhoods, many of these neighborhoods no longer have the status and importance of the past, and the continuity of their identity is also facing a challenge. Dimaj neighborhood is one of the old neighborhoods of Qazvin, which still retains some of its historical signs and characteristics, but like many of the old neighborhoods of the city, it faces issues in the field of preserving the identity, quality of life and vitality of the neighborhood.

He authored "Enhancement of vitality in Dimaj neighborhood of Qazvin" focusing on the vitality of this neighborhood, which was published by Shama Avid Publications. For this reason, we have discussed with him about the characteristics of Dimaj neighborhood, its current situation and ways to improve the vitality and preserve the identity of this neighborhood.

Where did the main idea of writing the book come from and why did you think it was necessary to deal with "vitality" in Dimaj neighborhood?

Because I observed that our historical contexts are turning into abandoned museums. The necessity of this work was to show that vitality in the old context is possible again, not by destruction and renovation, but by reviving the lost social ties and improving the quality of the space.

According to its historical background, what are the characteristics of Dimaj neighborhood of Qazvin that make it stand out as the subject of a study on "urban vitality"?

This neighborhood carries the historical wealth of Qazvin, and at the same time, it is strongly facing the challenge of wear and tear. The combination of closed and dense historical spaces along with today's dynamic needs made it an excellent platform to see how the conflict between body permanence and functional decline can be resolved with small interventions.

In this research, we evaluated vitality in a three-dimensional model: physical dimension (legibility of paths and permeability), social dimension (presence and daily interactions) and functional dimension (variety of uses that make life flow).

If there is no management of collective spaces and residents' participation, even the most valuable tissues will become dead spaces.

What is the relationship between the historical background and physical characteristics of Damaj neighborhood with the social status and quality of life of its residents today?

The introverted structure of the historic houses of Dimaj, which used to protect the privacy and security of the family, today has fueled "spatial isolationism" in a way due to the change in lifestyle and lack of adaptation to modern needs. In the book, I have explored how to make this structure more permeable and relevant to the needs of the day without damaging the identity.

To what extent are the suggested solutions of the book to improve the vitality of Dimaj neighborhood with the economic, social and management realities of Qazvin today, and what is the most important obstacle to their implementation?

The biggest obstacle is not in the lack of funds, but in the complex bureaucracy and lack of understanding between the city administration and local stakeholders, which prevents the implementation of flexible and human-oriented plans.

In terms of methodology, in what framework was this research done, and what methods, data and methods of information collection did you use to check the vitality of Damaj neighborhood?

We needed both quantitative data (to accurately measure the indicators through questionnaires) and qualitative data (in-depth interviews and participatory observation) to hear the real voices of the residents and their narratives about the neighborhood.

When a researcher enters a neighborhood like Dimaj, he is faced with residents who are tired of the unfulfilled promises of the officials in the past. Breaking down this wall of distrust required constant presence, a lot of patience, and showing that I wasn't there for a paper plan, but to hear what they had to say.
