The White House and Zakaria did not respond to The New York Times' requests for comment.

However, Trump told reporters on Friday that he had encouraged Zakaria to "reconsider" accepting the position.

Describing his conversation with his press spokesperson, he said: "Honestly, if I were you, I would reconsider."

Trump added: "Katie, do you really need this job? I don't think you need to."

Zakaria got off to a great start. His first and last press conference was held on Tuesday, and a flurry of headlines followed, questioning whether he had misrepresented himself as a lawyer.

The President of the United States called him a "lawyer", even though Zakaria was not admitted to the bar exam.

Zakaria also called the President of the United States as his husband in a blunder.
